With the current reporting of 984 cases, Chennai has recorded 1,07,109 cases so far of which 93,231 have been discharged and 2,272 had died of the viral infection.
India, which is the worst-affected country by COVID-19 in Asia and third in the world after the United States and Brazil, has been witnessing peaking COVID-19 cases amid the steady rise in the recoveries.
Tamil Nadu had earlier witnessed such incidents of the undignified burials. Earlier, Chennai doctor Simon Hercules, who succumbed to the viral infection, had also faced such undignified burial.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained and following the blaze, around 40 other COVID-19 patients, who were getting treated at the hospital, have been rescued and shifted to the city's civic hospital.
According to the Union Health Ministry, Tamil Nadu is the second Indian state with the most number of COVID-19 deaths after Maharashtra, which had reported 15,842 as of Tuesday morning.
