The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 5,175 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Wednesday which had taken the state's tally beyond 2.70 lakh by reporting 2,73,460 cases so far including the active, recovered, and deceased patients.
According to the official press release issued by the Health Department, Tamil Nadu has tested 29,53,561 samples so far including 61,166 that were tested on Wednesday of which 5,175 returned positive for the viral infection. These 5,175 cases include the influx of 40 people who returned to the state from other regions. Of these 5,175 cases, 3,033 are males and the rest 2,142 are female patients.

The press release stated that 17 districts have crossed the tally of a hundred cases each in the current reporting. Chennai has reported 1,044 cases, 487 belongs to Chengalpattu, 472 cases from Thiruvallur, 342 cases from Kancheepuram, 278 cases from Theni, 179 cases from Vellore, 175 cases from Kanyakumari, 173 cases belong to Thoothukudi, 170 cases belong to Cuddalore, 159 cases from Salem, and 150 cases belong to Pudukottai.
Ranipet has reported 143 cases, Trichy has reported 136 cases, 121 cases belong to Tenkasi, 112 cases each from Coimbatore and Thiruvannamalai, and 106 cases from Madurai. The state reported 6,031 fresh discharges taking the total number of discharges to 2,14,815 so far.
The state has also reported 112 fresh deaths - the highest single-day rise of deaths since the outbreak which surpassed the previous tally of 109. Through the highest spike of single-day deaths, the state has reported over a hundred deaths for the third consecutive day. According to the press release, of these 112 deaths, 84 deaths were reported at the government hospitals while the rest were recorded at the private establishments.
Of these 112 deaths, 25 belong to Chennai while most of the districts had accounted for a single-digit yet an active contribution in the state's death toll. Through the current reporting of 112 deaths, the state's death toll currently stands at 4,461, which is the second-highest in India after Maharashtra, according to the Union Health Ministry.
Amid the drop in the fresh cases, the state has been reporting a surge in the death toll which further saddened the people and challenged the government in preventing the vulnerable population along with mitigating the virus spread. Of these 112 deaths, 104 deaths were identified with co-morbid conditions. On July 5, the state's death toll stood at 1,510 and in one month, the state has added 2,951 more deaths to its tally.
With the current reporting of 1,044 cases, Chennai has recorded 1,05,004 cases so far of which 90,966 have been discharged and 2,227 had died of the viral infection. As of Wednesday, Tamil Nadu has reported 2,73,460 cases so far of which 54,184 are active, 2,14,815 have been recovered, and 4,461 had succumbed to the virus.
