Murmu was the first Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir after the semi-autonomy region was made the Union territory following the abrogation of Article 370.
On August 5, 2019, the Central BJP government, which formed the government for the second consecutive time, announced the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A, which guaranteed the special status for Jammu and Kashmir.
