GC Murmu, former J&K Governor, gets a potent post! Appointed as CAG of India

A day after getting resigned from the post of Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Girish Chandra Murmu has been appointed as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, which is one of the potent posts in the Indian government and the incumbent will be auditing all receipts and expenditure of the Government of India and the state governments. 

Upon being appointed as CAG, Murmu will be replacing Rajiv Mehrishi who completes his term on August 7. Murmu was the first Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir after the semi-autonomy region was made the Union territory following the abrogation of Article 370. 

On Wednesday, he has moved his resignation to the President which and his resignation made headlines as he has tendered his relinquishment on August 5, which is the first anniversary of the abrogation. Earlier on Thursday, President Ram Nath Kovind has accepted his resignation and Murmu was replaced by former Union Minister and BJP leader Manoj Sinha. 

Hours after accepting his resignation, the government has appointed Murmu as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India. In the notification, the Department of Economic Affairs said that the President has been pleased to appoint Shri Girish Chandra Murmu to be the Comptroller and Auditor General of India with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office. 

Murmu (60) is the IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre. He served as Principal Secretary to Narendra Modi when the latter was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He was also served as the Expenditure Secretary in the Ministry of Finance following which he was elevated as the first Lt Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Union territory. 

Murmu is the 14th CAG of India and the CAG is appointed for a term of six years or till the incumbent attains the age of 65 years, whichever comes earlier. CAG, whose reports are tabled before Parliament and legislatures of the states, would be nominated by the Prime Minister and appointed by the President.
