According to the Union Health Ministry, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu are the two Indian states that contribute about 48% of the country's total active caseload.
As of Thursday, Tamil Nadu has reported 1,56,369 cases so far of which 46,714 are active, 1,07,416 have been recovered, and 2,236 had succumbed to the virus.
KP Anbalagan was the first minister in the state to test positive after which other three ministers Thangamani, Sellur Raju, and Nilofer Kafeel spelled positive for the virus.
Along with reporting a spike in the fresh cases, the state has reported 5,106 fresh discharges taking the tally of total discharges to 1,07,416 so far.
The officials say that the collector was actively engaging in the relief works and inspecting the containment zones in the district during which he could have contracted to the viral infection
Madurai has been emerging as the COVID-19 hotspot and with the unprecedented spike of 464 cases on Monday, the temple city has reported 6539 cases so far.
According to the reports, the existing restrictions will be carry forwarded till July 31st and no public transportations will be available within and between the districts.
