The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 4,549 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Thursday taking the state's tally beyond 1.56 lakh by reporting 1,56,369 positive cases so far including active, recovered, and deceased cases.
According to the official press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 17,82,635 samples so far including 44,888 that were tested on Thursday of which 4,549 cases returned positive for the pandemic. These 4,549 cases include 66 people who returned to the state from other regions.

Of these 4,549 cases, 2,794 are males and the rest 1,755 are female patients. According to the press release, 14 districts have reported with the major caseloads in the current reporting - 1157 cases from Chennai, 526 cases from Thiruvallur, 267 cases from Madurai, 253 cases from Vellore, 212 cases from Thiruvannamalai, and 179 cases from Chengalpattu.
Thoothukudi has reported 171 cases, 146 cases from Kanyakumari, 145 cases each from Ranipet and Virudhunagar, 130 cases from Tirunelveli, 126 cases from Dindigul, 101 cases from Villupuram, and 94 cases from Trichy. Along with reporting a spike in the fresh cases, the state has reported 5,106 fresh discharges taking the tally of total discharges to 1,07,416 so far.
The state has recorded 69 fresh deaths through which the death toll currently stands at 2,236 - fourth highest in India. According to the press release, of these 69 deaths, 44 were recorded from the government hospitals while the rest 25 are reported at the private establishments.
63 out of 69 deceased were identified with co-morbid conditions, largely diabetes, and hypertension. Of these 69 deaths, 23 belong to Chennai, seven belong to Thiruvallur, five belong to Madurai, four each from Chengalpattu and Vellore, three each from Kancheepuram, Theni, Trichy, and Villupuram, two each from Salem, Thoothukudi, and Virudhunagar and one each from Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Karur, Krishnagiri, Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Thanjavur, and Tiruvannamalai.
With the current reporting of 1,157 cases, Chennai has recorded yet another spike while compared to the state of COVID-19 in the city two weeks back and the city's tally currently stands at 82,128 so far. Some districts like Madurai, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Ranipet, Vellore, and Thiruvannamalai have been emerging as a COVID-19 hotspot in the state with the sharpest spikes of virus cases.
In the current reporting of 4,549 cases, Chennai has contributed 1,157 cases and the rest 3,392 cases were recorded outside Chennai, surfacing the rapid spread across the state. As of Thursday, Tamil Nadu has reported 1,56,369 cases so far of which 46,714 are active, 1,07,416 have been recovered, and 2,236 had succumbed to the virus.
