COVID-19 in TN: Chennai reports a decline while cases surge in other districts!

The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 4,526 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Tuesday taking the total state's tally beyond 1.47 lakhs by reporting 1,47,324 cases so far including active, recovered, and deceased patients.

The current reporting has been recorded as one of the highest single-day spikes in the state since the outbreak which has come as the sequel of the rapid spread of cases outside Chennai. According to the official press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 16,95,365 samples so far including 41,357 that were tested on Tuesday of which 4,526 returned positive. 

 

These 4,526 cases include 59 people who returned to the state from other regions. Of these 4,526 cases, 2,723 are males while the rest 1,803 are female patients. According to the press release, 15 districts in the state have accounted for major share in the current reporting - 1,078 cases belong to Chennai, 450 cases belong to Madurai, 360 cases belong to Thiruvallur, 328 cases belong to Virudhunagar, and Chengalpattu has reported 264 cases. 

194 cases belong to Vellore, 188 cases belong to Coimbatore, 157 cases belong to Dindigul, 122 cases belong to Kanyakumari, 121 cases belong to Villupuram, 117 cases each from Kancheepuram and Trichy. 113 cases belong to Sivagangai, 112 and 103 cases from Thoothukudi and Tenkasi respectively. Of these 15 districts, about ten districts have reported unprecedented spikes. 

The state has reported 4,743 fresh discharges taking the total number of discharges to 97,310 so far and the state has also reported 67 fresh deaths through which the state's death toll currently stands at 2,099 so far. According to the press release, of these 67 deaths, 50 reported from the government hospitals while the rest 17 were from the private establishments.

Of these 67 deaths, 18 deaths belong to Chennai, six from Trichy, four each from Chengalpattu, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Sivagangai, Thiruvallur, and Vellore. Two each from Krishnagiri, Thanjavur, and Virudhunagar, and one each from Coimbatore, Kancheepuram, Pudukottai, Tenkasi, Theni, Tiruvannamalai, Thoothukudi, Tiruppur, and Villupuram. 65 deceased out of 67 were identified with co-morbid conditions. 

With the current reporting of 1,078 cases, Chennai sees a drop in the numbers, and the city's tally currently stands at 79,662. However, Madurai has been emerging as the COVID-19 hotspot and with the unprecedented spike of 450 cases, the southern district has reported 6990 cases so far. On July 1, the total number of cases in Madurai was 2,858 and in a fortnight, it has added over 4000 cases to its count. 

As of Tuesday, Tamil Nadu has reported 1,47,324 cases so far of which 47,912 are active, 97,310 have been recovered, and 2,099 had succumbed to the virus.
