Those critical of the character argue that celebrating Rathnavelu might seem insensitive and irresponsible, considering the negative connotations associated with such a persona.

Fahadh Faasil plays the antagonist Rathnavelu, a district secretary in the same party as Maamannan, who belongs to the dominant community and has a brash and aggressive attitude.

As a token of appreciation for the success of ‘Maamannan’, Udhayanidhi Stalin gifted Mari Selvaraj a Mini Cooper car worth Rs 80 lakh.

‘Maamannan’ revolves around the relationship between a father and son who are at loggerheads over the caste hierarchy and social injustice in society.

The director has been hailed as one of the most promising voices in Tamil cinema for his realistic and hard-hitting depiction of social issues.

The film also boasts of a stellar technical crew, led by Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, who has collaborated with Mari Selvaraj for the first time.

He followed it up with films like ‘Aadhavan’, ‘Manmadan Ambu’  and ‘7aum Arivu’, collaborating with some of the biggest names in the industry, where he made his first surprising cameo at the end of the film Aadhavan.

The director, who is a huge fan of star, said that he had met him in person and shared his script with him.

His previous films, Pariyerum Perumal (2018) and Karnan (2021), also dealt with caste discrimination and violence and were hailed as powerful social dramas.
