The much-awaited political thriller Maamannan, starring Vadivelu, Udhayanidhi Stalin, Fahadh Faasil and Keerthy Suresh, is all set to stream on Netflix from July 27. The film, directed by Mari Selvaraj and produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin, has music by the legendary A.R. Rahman. The film was released in theatres on June 29 and received positive reviews from critics and moviebuffs, especially for the never seen role from Vadivelu.
Netflix India took to Twitter and wrote, “VADIVELU, UDHAYANIDHI, FAHADH, KEERTHY, MARI SELVARAJ AND AR RAHMAN TOGETHER!! We’re seeing stars #Maamannan, coming to Netflix on the 27th of July! #MaamannanOnNetflix”.
Maamannan tells the story of a father-son duo, who belong to the oppressed community and rise up in the political arena of Tamil Nadu. Vadivelu plays the role of Maamannan, an MLA, while Udhayanidhi Stalin plays his son Athiveeran “Veera”, a practitioner of Adimurai, an ancient martial art form.
Fahadh Faasil plays the antagonist Rathnavelu, a district secretary in the same party as Maamannan, who belongs to the dominant community and has a brash and aggressive attitude. Keerthy Suresh plays Leela, Veera’s love interest, who is an educator for the poor and downtrodden.
The film explores the themes of casteism, social justice, revenge and power dynamics in a gripping and realistic manner. Mari Selvaraj, who is known for his critically acclaimed films Pariyerum Perumal and Karnan, has once again delivered a hard-hitting and impactful film that showcases the struggles and aspirations of the marginalized sections of society.
The film also marks the comeback of Vadivelu, who is a very popular comedy actor in Tamil cinema, after a hiatus. Vadivelu has also lent his voice for a song composed by A.R. Rahman for the first time in the film.
