Tamil director Mari Selvaraj, who is basking in the success of his latest political thriller Maamannan, has revealed that he had narrated a story to actor Vijay and received a positive response from him. The director, who is a huge fan of Vijay, said that he had met him in person and shared his script with him.
“When I saw him for real I became a director and narrated a story that I would want to make into film and Vijay sir said ‘Enna sir’ (What is this?) after hearing the story. Surely we will do a film,” Mari Selvaraj said in an interview for the promotion of Maamannan.
Maamannan, which released on Thursday, stars Udhayanidhi Stalin, Keerthy Suresh, Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu in lead roles. The film, produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin under his banner Red Giant Movies, has music composed by A.R. Rahman. The film revolves around the political and social conflicts between two communities in Tamil Nadu, and how a father-son duo rise up against the oppression.
The film has been praised for its hard-hitting portrayal of caste issues, its powerful performances by the lead actors, especially Vadivelu and Fahadh Faasil, and its rousing background score by Rahman. The film has also been appreciated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who is Udhayanidhi Stalin’s father.
Mari Selvaraj, who made his directorial debut with Pariyerum Perumal in 2018, is known for his realistic and socially relevant films. He has also directed Karnan, starring Dhanush, which was released in 2021. The director has said that Maamannan is a result of the distress he felt after watching Thevar Magan, a 1992 film starring Kamal Haasan and Sivaji Ganesan, which depicted the caste violence in southern Tamil Nadu.
Vijay, on the other hand, is one of the most popular and successful actors in Tamil cinema. He has acted in over 60 films in his career spanning over three decades. He is known for his mass appeal, his dance skills and his philanthropic activities. His last film was Varisu, directed by Vamshi Paidipally, which was released in 2022. He is currently working on Leo, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, which is expected to release in October.
The news of Mari Selvaraj narrating a story to Vijay has created a lot of excitement among the fans of both the director and the actor. They are eagerly waiting for an official announcement regarding their collaboration. If it happens, it will be a treat for the crowd to watch Vijay in a Mari Selvaraj film.
