The political thriller Maamannan, directed by Mari Selvaraj and produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin, has been receiving rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film, which stars an ensemble cast of Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil, Udhayanidhi Stalin and Keerthy Suresh, released on 29 June 2023 and has been creating a buzz for its hard-hitting portrayal of caste and politics in Tamil Nadu.

One of the admirers of the film is none other than acclaimed filmmaker Karthik Subburaj, who took to Twitter to praise the film and its team. He wrote, “#Maamannan Sits tall in moments showcasing the strong voice of @MariSelvaraj about Caste in Politics and vice versa…,

"Super awesome performance by #Vadivelu sir supported by strong performances of #FahadhFaasil, @Udhaystalin sir & @KeerthyOfficial with intense music of @arrahman sir elevating it… Congratulations to whole team for the success…" he added.

The film showcases the struggle of a father (Vadivelu) and his son (Udhayanidhi Stalin). They face resistance from a powerful villain (Fahadh Faasil) who tries to crush their dreams. Udhayanidhi plays Athiveeran, a man who collects evidence to expose the corruption and injustice of the antagonist, played by Fahadh Faasil.

Vadivelu plays the titular role, Mamannan who also supports Athiveeran in his mission. Keerthy Suresh plays Samba Lal, Athiveeran’s companion,  The film also boasts of a stellar technical crew, led by Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, who has collaborated with Mari Selvaraj for the first time. The film’s music has been widely appreciated for its soulful and stirring tunes.

The film’s cinematography is handled by Theni Eswar, who also worked with Selvaraj in his previous films Pariyerum Perumal (2018) and Karnan (2021). The film’s editing is done by Selva R.K., who has worked with Selvaraj since his debut short film Thangarasu (2010).
