The announcement that actor Suriya will be conferred with the National Award was made on July 23, 2022, when he celebrated his birthday. After being picked as a recipient of a prestigious honour, both Suriya and his fans were overjoyed. Months after the announcement, the 68th National Film Award ceremony was held on Friday - September 30 in Delhi and the honour was presented to the winners by President Droupadi Murmu. The awards were presented to the best cinema in 2020.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Murmu said, "Cinema is not only an industry, it is also a medium of artistic expression of our culture and values of life. It is also a medium for connecting our society and nation-building." In what has become a quintessential achievement, the movie 'Soorarai Pottru' has won more National Awards. Suriya, who played the lead role as Nedumaran in the movie, received the National Award for best actor for his spectacular performance.
Soorarai Pottru has won the National Award for the best feature film while actress Aparna Balamurali, who played the female lead, has won the award for best actress. Additionally, music composer GV Prakash Kumar has won the National Award for the best background score in Soorarai Pottru. The movie's director Sudha Kongara and screenwriter Shalini Usha Nair won the National Award for best screenplay.
After receiving the National Award for the first time, Suriya said, "Huge honour. Truly grateful to the National Film Award jury and the Government of India. A lot of emotions running through my mind. I have a lot of people to thank...Getting goosebumps. Truly a moment which I'll never forget". Speaking to PTI, actress Aparna Balamurali said, "I feel great. Words won't be enough to express my feelings and what I'm going through today."
"Thanks to my director for having trust in me and she is the one who pushed me. I definitely want to take this forward in my career as an inspiration and encouragement. This really has given me a push to better my career and do better characters", Aparna added. Soorarai Pottru is inspired by the life of Air Deccan founder Captain GR Gopinath and the movie was released in November 2020. In the wake of the Covid lockdown, it directly got released on Amazon Prime Video.
Soorarai Pottru was produced by Suriya and Jyothika under their banner 2D Entertainment. The ardent fans of Suriya are in adoration of their favourite icon and movie bringing in new praise and the pictures of the film crew posing for a selfie have gone viral. Suriya and Jyothika were in the spotlight in the midst of a cluster of stars. The image that buffs love the most is of the power couple proudly posing with their kids and accolades.
It is pertinent to note that after a huge success in Tamil, Soorarai Pottru is being remade in Hindi where Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madan are playing the lead roles. Interestingly, actor Suriya is featuring a cameo appearance in the Hindi remake. Moreover, Soorari Pottru was one of the very few Tamil movies that received one of the highest ratings on IMDb. With Suriya and Aparna Balamurali playing the lead roles, Soorarai Pottru stars Paresh Rawal, Urvashi, Mohan Babu, and Karunas, among others in pivotal roles. Recently, Suriya announced that he will remake the film in Hindi under his production house.
