Despite the unwillingness in conducting the local body elections, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi Palaniswami has been compelled to fill the vacancies of local bodies through the elections with accord to the directive of the Supreme court and he will be anticipated to have hard campaign trail before the people and heated negotiations within the party and its allies. Adding to that, the hands of Palaniswami has been tied with anxiety after the hidden agenda of ADMK has been smoked off by the BJP.
The state government led by ADMK and the head Edappadi Palaniswami has reportedly been postponing the local body elections for the past three years by acquiring consent from the judiciary. It allegedly hunting the possible ways to conclude the current term of assembly without the local body representatives by citing the government's legal battle against the petition filed by the DMK party in Madras High court that has left the people with having no proper and adequate mechanisms in local bodies to meet the expectations that had ignited the rise of series of corruptions. After the Supreme court has directed the state's election commission to conduct the elections, the election commission has proposed to conduct the elections in December.
As having just one month left for the elections, the furor and the heat have been occupied on the grounds of political parties where most of the parties had started distributing applications for the party men who wish to contest in local body elections. While we questioned the officials of the state election commission on the preparedness of the elections, they said that the state's electoral secretary should have been issued the notification about the elections before October 31st as per the orders of the Supreme court but being left with no option than to accept the instructions of the state government, the electoral secretary had demanded a delay in issuing notification by claiming that the electronic voting machines weren't inspected by the electoral authorities due to the state legislative elections in Maharashtra and Haryana and further asked another four weeks extension from the Supreme court and thus, the notification with the deadline of October 31st, has been postponed. They had asserted that the commission would be issuing notification on the election during the first week of December and the elections can be held during the Pongal festivals if the government doesn't indent to propose new welfare schemes.
While preparing for unwilling elections, the sources have stated that Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami had tabled the meet with the senior ministers and leaders of the party in which they had emerged with a hidden agenda to stalemate the allied parties. Our sources in the ADMK party have cited that out of 15 Mayoral seats in Tamil Nadu, BJP demands five seats including Chennai with the view of fishing at least three mayoral seats and the BJP's Central leadership has been pressurizing Edappadi Palaniswami to reserve the mayoral seats and adding to that, the other allied parties like PMK, DMDK have been seeking three mayoral seats each along with the seats of Chairman of Urban municipalities, rural panchayats, and ward councilor. BJP hopes to acquire about 35% of total local body seats while PMK and DMDK urge about 20 percent and 25 percent of the seats respectively from the ADMK.
The sources of ADMK party has claimed that the party would be left with no important and significant local body seats, if it has ought to fulfill the expectations of the allied parties and the party's leadership, thinks that if the allied parties flag their victories in Mayoral seats, it would turn out to be the huge challenge for ADMK party during 2021 state legislative elections. By reflecting the same notions to the Chief Minister during the meet, most of the cabinet ministers had asserted that ADMK party should contest in all the Mayoral seats to enhance the party's power and presence and stated that the allied parties can be given with the rest of the local body seats apart from the Mayoral seats and some had pictured that if the party allocates the Mayor seats for the allied parties, it would provide huge victory for the DMK party, which eyes for 2021 legislative elections.
By noting the observations of the ministers, Edappadi Palaniswami had stated that the BJP and the allied parties could go for any extent in webbing the Mayoral seats during which the Chief Minister proposed a hidden agenda for removing the current legislature of electing the Mayors directly where he had called the ministers to revoke the current legislature and to replace with the older one, which says that the mayors can be elected indirectly based on the numbers of councilors. The sources have revealed that the ministers had consented for the proposals with the view of contesting in 70% of the local body seats in which the party can at least land up to 50% victories.
After being aware of the hidden agenda, the reports say that the BJP has exchanged the heated words with the ADMK and seemingly warned the state party that it will face series of unexpected scenes from Delhi if it proposes to change the prevailing legislature of local body elections after which Edappadi Palaniswami has halted the process of executing his hidden agenda. When questioned the sources close to the Central BJP on the developments, they had stated that Edapaddi Palaniswami doesn't wish to host the local body elections and he was assented to conduct the elections through the pressure of BJP and it was strongly conveyed by the Union Minister Piyush Goyal when the state minister Thangamani met him in Delhi last month. He also has spoken with Edappadi Palaniswami on the stands of BJP.
The pressure from the BJP has come with the motive of staying close to the people that will increase and enhance the base of the party in Tamil Nadu and the Central leadership of BJP hopes to fish more local body seats in Tamil Nadu which will aid the party to attain stable victory in 2021 state legislative elections and after ADMK has allegedly attempted with the hidden agenda of calling indirect Mayor elections, the BJP National President Amit Shah had junked the plan of ADMK, which has now dropped off the proposal.
The state authorities have revealed that the ADMK party has been purportedly eyeing to skip the elections by citing the discrepancies and filing litigations in the court and on the other hand, the ADMK has been receiving applications from the party men to contest in Mayoral elections where the Mayoral seats like Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, Salem, Tirunelveli have been priced with 15 crores whereas the rest of the Mayoral seats have fixed with 10 crores and the councilor seats in Chennai would be awarded to the party men who can spend about Rs 7 crores while the rest of the councilor seats would be awarded for the candidates with Rs 5 crores.
Inline to that, the party has been fixing the rates as per the local body seats across the state.
