After a grand victory in the rural local bodies of Tamil Nadu powered by a stable grassroot presence, actor Vijay's Makkal Iyakkam is all set to contest in the urban local body polls that will be held on February 19 across the state. The Tamil Nadu Election Commission has on Wednesday announced the schedule for the urban local body polls which will be electing Mayors for big cities.
Actor Vijay's outfit has given a good competition in the rural local body polls held last year and the actor's young fanbase has formed a significant voter circle for Vijay Makkal Iyakkam in a fashion that it has got more seats than some of the full-time political parties. In last year's rural local body polls, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam has won over 115 seats and the victory has come when the actor has been surfaced with speculations over his political entry.
It was the first time that the members of Vijay Makkal Iyakkam has contested in the polls and they had managed to win more seats than Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam and Seeman's Naam Tamilar Katchi. The members of Vijay Makkal Iyakkam have won several local body seats in the newly demarcated districts including Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Ranipet, and Tirupattur.
With the wave of support and fanbase across the state for the actor, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam will now be contesting in the urban local body polls. As per Tamil Nadu State Election Commission's notification, the urban local body polls would be held on February 19. The polls will be electing 12,820 posts and they include - 21 mayors, 138 chairmen for municipalities, 490 town panchayats.
The polls will also be electing 1,064 councillors for municipal corporations, 3,468 councillors for municipalities, and 8,288 councillors for town panchayats. The polling will be held on February 19th and the votes will be counted on February 22nd and the results will be announced thereafter. The filing of nominations will be from January 28 to February 4 and the last day of nomination withdrawal is on February 7.
As filing nominations will begin from Friday, the members of Vijay Makkal Iyakkam are prepared to move their nominations to contest in their respective districts. Bussy Anand, the General Secretary of the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam said in a recent meeting, "We will be contesting the polls and candidates will be finalized by the district secretaries."
According to reports, the members say that they are waiting for approval from Vijay to use his name and photo during the polls. After the polls, municipal corporations including Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Trichy, and Salem will have elected Mayors after six years.
