Aligarh University, a public university in the BJP ruling state of Uttar Pradesh, has become one of the national universities on holding the base for the rampant rise of the protests and unrests spurred across the nation against the prejudiced Citizenship Amendment Act and the premises of the University has been witnessing the intense stir among the students.
Similarly, Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi has been staging agitation since the passage of the Act and students of these two public universities have been victimized by the police crackdown and suppression as the security forces have reportedly been unleashing the excessive forces to lower the voices of the students and in the middle of the allegations that the use of the excessive forces had instigated the riots and clashes between the police and students, we tabled the discussion with Gowtham, a Tamil native student of Aligarh University and leader of the students' forum of the varsity to know what has happened in the premises.
While asked to describe the incident, Gowtham said that the students of Aligarh University had demonstrated peacefully against the police crackdown on the students of Delhi Jamia Mallia University and despite the peaceful demonstrations, the police had rolled out an excessive lathi-charge to suppress the voices of the students and they deployed water cannons and rubber bullets that had injured the students as one student has been hospitalized for breathing troubles and the other student had got severely hurt in his hands after the police had triggered rubber bullets on him.
He stated that the police forces had entered the premises and the accommodation area of the students and they allegedly attacked the students residing in every room and they burnt an entire hall that houses the documents and belongings of the students. When asked about the assertion of the police on using the forces to counter the students' actions on destroying the public properties, Gowtham stated that despite the protest has been rampant across the nation, the students of Islamic Universities have been targeted and suppressed and cited that the police forces had incited the riots like how the police in Tamil Nadu instigated the violence during 'Jallikattu' protests. He added that the students with RSS ideology had joined hands with police and attacked the students of the Jamia Millia University.
He noted that the motive of the students of Aligarh University is to protect Indian democracy and so is the motive of Jamia University and with the motive, Aligarh University students had staged fierce protests before and these both institutes have been targeted and attacked because they are Islamic universities and claimed that the rightists' groups of the country have been repressing the Aligarh University since Independence as it houses more students from minorities.
When quizzed about the BJP's notion that the Islamic students of these universities are from Pakistan, he asserted that no student of Aligarh University hail from Pakistan and it has students of diversified backgrounds regardless of religion and he accused the BJP's intention of deporting Muslims from the country and concluded that 'we won't let our fellow Muslim students to get banished from the country.' The reports say that had filed FIR against 21 students of the University and five hundred unnamed persons.
