Five restless days, about eighty hours of tireless rescue missions and the countless prayers from across the state and beyond the political and religious differences - these were the scenes that had united the minds and voices of Tamil people together for the past four days by keeping their Diwali celebrations aside with the sole motive of rescuing Sujith, a two year old child who fell into the bore well that was drilled before five years by his family in Nadukattupatti, a hamlet where the family resides which rests near Manapparai in Trichy district.
It was evening of 25th October, 2019 when the child was sleeping in his home while his grandfather was resting outside. His father was in the construction work out of the town and his mother was watering the cattle. The first child returned to home from his school around 4.30 pm after which he had taken his little brother Sujith for evening play in the farm behind their home which has the abandoned bore well. Moments later, Sujith had unknowingly stepped on the bore well that had trapped and swallowed him. His elder brother had reported the incident to his mother following which the neighbors had called on the Poclain machine to rescue the child. He was under six feet when his mother started to broke down with tears and they had immediately informed to the ambulance and fire department which rushed to the spot and the child went to 18 feet after poclain had quaked the soil and since then and for the next four days, the state of Tamil Nadu and the people were offering prayers and hopes to the family and the government authorities and dozens of rescue teams were camped in the hamlet to rescue the child but eventually the rescue operations, that lasted for about 80 hours, had recovered the corpse from the bore well.
Through our credible sources, we have been able to list out the timeline of the tragedy and what really had happened around the clock for the five restless days.
- October 25th, 2019:
5.00 pm: The children were playing in their farm and around 5.30 pm, Sujith had fell off into the bore well in front of his elder brother and trapped under six feet from the ground.
6.00 pm : The neighbors had attempted to rescue the child with the help of poclain and due to the sudden vibration under the ground, Sujith went 18 feet beneath the ground.
6.30 - 7.15 pm : The team of Fire and Rescue department had camped their initial operations and the district collector, police chief and local ministers had arrived at the spot.
Around 8.00 pm : In the presence of the ministers, it was decided to dig a hole near to the bore well through four poclains. By this time, it was noted that the child was trapped under 28 feet and till 8.30 pm, the machinery had managed to drill about 17 feet deep into the ground after which the process was halted by citing the presence of massive rocks.
9.00 pm : The authorities had asked Sujith's mother Kalamary to keep exchanging words with Sujith where she given hope to her child towards safe rescue.
10.00 pm : State health minister Vijayabaskar joined his cabinet colleagues in the spot and he informed to the local rescue teams and experts and Madhesh, the 9th grade student was one among the notable volunteers in the rescue mission who worked tirelessly to recover the child.
11.00 pm : The rescue team from Coimbatore had reached the spot along with handful of teams and the team from Anna university had roped down their thermo camera to accurately locate the child which had identified that Sujith's body was recorded with 28 degree of temperature around 8.30 pm. Since the thermo camera device was recognized by IIT Madras, the rescue mission had hoped to lift the child from the trap of bore well but in the early morning hours of the next day, the attempt was left with failure as the soil particles was raining on the child that had registered a major setback.
- October 26th, 2019 :
12.00 am : Manikandan's rescue team had tried to tie a rope in Sujith's hands where one of his hands was tied with the knot of the rope and the attempt of roping the other hand was met with failure and they somehow managed to lift the child with one hand but had resulted with another setback. After submerging to more feet, the child was given with oxygen through the pipe.
2.00 am : The poclains had resumed its operations of digging a pit near to the bore well and after accounted with the episodes of quakes and vibrations, the services of poclains were called off.
3.30 am : The rescue team headed by Venkatesan from Namakkal had joined the rescue camp and started their rescue missions through their mechanism that also was recognized by IIT further to which, it was declared that the child had reached 70 feet beneath the ground and it was confirmed that the child responses and remains conscious through oxygen.
5.00 am : Veeramani's rescue team from Pudukottai had arrived at the site and their multiple efforts hadn't helped the rescue where they have tried using sucking method. With attaining no developments in the rescue missions, there were no responses and movements from the child following which the authorities had called on National Disaster Relief force for escalating the rescue operations.
5.30 am : The rescue teams had conveyed that they hadn't recorded any movements from the child and the images had shown only the fingers while rest of the body was covered by the soil and the oxygen was supplied. It was feared that the oxygen would become a toxic gas if it get mixed with the other toxic gases beneath the ground.
8.00 am : The rescue operations kept ongoing for the second consecutive day and the stunt team headed by stunt master Anbariv had camped in the spot and they had joined the mission to rescue the child and their attempt lasted for about one hour and met with failure.
11.00 am : While addressing the reporters, state health minister Vijayabaskar had said that they had been hoping to rescue the child like how the state had rescued the people who were stranded beneath the building collapsed in Chennai's Mowlivakkam in which the people were reportedly trapped inside the debris for about 72 hours. He further stated that with the directives of the Chief minister, the National and State Disaster Relief forces have been stationed in the rescue missions.
12.00 pm : The State Disaster Relief forces had majorly involved in the rescue missions after which the team of 33 NDRF personnel had arrived to the site from Arakkonam and both the teams had unleashed the available mechanisms during which the site witnessed light rainfall with the view of not letting the rain water, the bore well was covered with the tent and sacks. They had installed the machinery with the cameras to recover the child.
2.30 pm : Sujith's mother became unconscious after she had skipped the food and was under full of tears after which the government doctors had immediately treated her. On the other side, the rescue missions had no possible developments to report.
- October 27th, 2019:
1.00 am : After the restless rescue operations from the National and State Disaster Relief forces that lasted for about 12 hours, it was decided to drill a hole near to the bore well and in the view of that, Rig driller machines were called on to the spot and with the motive of not letting the child beneath the ground, his hands were tied and pressurized using airlock.
4.00 am : After marking the exact place to dig, the Rig machine was started from Lalgudi in Trichy's district and en route to the site, it has been reported that the vehicle transporting the rig machine had gone through break down for about four times and the tyres were punctured for couple of times before reaching the spot.
7.10 am : Finally, the Rig machine had started to drill a hole near to the bore well and it had managed to drill only about 10 feet in four hours.
2.30 pm : Health minister Vijayabaskar had again addressed the reporters along with the revenue commissioner Radhakrishnan and they had said that the drilling had faced huge hindrance from the rocks and further cited that they had called on the second rig machine from Ramanathapuram.
5.00 pm : The second Rig machine had arrived in the spot and installed its mechanisms.
10.00 pm : The drilling of first rig machine was stopped after it had drilled about 26 to 28 feet beneath the ground.
11.00 pm : Following the halt of first rig machine, the second rig machine which belongs to L&T had started its drilling operations.
11.30 pm : Deputy Chief minister of the state O Pannerselvam and his son, Theni MP Ravindranath Kumar had arrived to the site and after examining the rescue operations, Pannerselvam had said that the state government is committed and will flag all possible ways to rescue the child safely. Later, Karur MP Jothimani had reached the village and solaced Sujith's parents. The state transport minister M R Vijayabaskar had stationed at the spot along with other ministers.
October 28th, 2019 :
9.00 am : The leader of Tamil Maanila Congress G K Vasan visited the spot and along with health minister Vijayabaskar, he solaced Sujith's father after which they spoke to the reporters where they had acknowledged that the drilling operations were meeting with several challenges and indicated that the machinery of disaster relief forces were damaged due to massive rocks. While questioned about the condition of the child, Vijayabaskar told that there were no response from the child.
10.00 am : The temples, cathedrals and mosques in the state had offered the prayers to rescue the child safely.
11.00 am : While addressing the reporters alongside the district collector, the revenue commissioner Radhakrishnan had asserted the possibilities of citing black soil beneath the rocks and claimed that the rescue operations won't be stopped at any cost and stated that they had planned to drill about 98 feet to rescue the child.
12.00 pm : There were minor discrepancies in the drilling of second rig machine where some of the parts had broken after which the workers had repaired the putrefaction. It was reported that the second machine had drilled about 42 feet.
12.30 pm : It was then decided to break the rocks through bore well machines before drilling through rig machine following which one of the personnel from fire department was roped down the ground till the feet that was drilled and marked the spots to dig further. About 1 pm, the bore well machine had started drilling in the marked spots.
2.00 pm : The transgender people from Trichy had met with Sujith's mother and solaced her to take the food, but she was refused to eat until her son was rescued.
4.00 pm : The bore well machine had drilled to crack the difficult and massive rocks to ease the process of rig machine. The bore well machine had halted its drilling after three hours and it was then reported that the rig and the bore well machines had collectively drilled about 65 feet.
9.00 pm : In the drilled hole, Ajithkumar was roped down with the help of oxygen and he was lifted up with the small piece of rock. During this time, the child was resting under 88 feet and after clearing the rocks, the drilling operations were escalated.
10.00 pm : The Fire and Rescue department had announced that they will climb down laterally through the hole which they called as the challenging mission.
- October 29th, 2019:
12.10 am : The Rig machine that was breaking the rocks had called off from the operations without prior announcements and reasons after which there were talks which said that the rotten smell and odors from the bore well had occupied the air.
1.00 am : Trichy IG Varadharajalu had arrived at the spot with team of police following which the local people and the reporters were forced to clear the spot.
2.15 am : Revenue commissioner Radhakrishnan had revealed that the authorities have been discussing with the doctors on the ways of rescue the decomposed body of the child.
3.14 am : After having their mechanisms failed, the National Disaster Relief force had prepared with new parameters through which they had attempted to lift the decomposed body of the child.
4.15 am : Through the help of their new mechanism, they had recovered the corpse from 80 feet after which they had taken to Manapparai government hospital.
6.00 am : The burial place was digged in Fathima Pudur's burial ground. With the view of paying last respect, temporary tent was set up in the burial ground.
7.30 am : The corpse, that was brought from the government hospital after performing autopsy, was kept in the burial ground for about one hour during which thousands of people had paid their last respect to Sujith. Rituals were performed as per Christianity.
8.45 am : After five restless days and eighty hours of tireless rescue missions, the corpse was buried in the presence of his parents and state ministers.
