As the outrage and resentments prevail over the custodial deaths of Jayaraj and Bennicks in Sathakulam, Thoothukudi, which strongly spotlighted the police brutality in India, the recent video, in connection to the custodial deaths, that has been released by the Tamil investigative news media Nakkheeran has poured concrete evidence on how the father and son duo was thrashed and tortured by the policemen.
The video that was released on the Nakkheeran's official youtube channel went viral on Friday and rampantly shared across the social media as this has been the first evidence emerged during the postmortem which had shown that the father and son sustained brutal injuries caused by the brutal degree of torture given by the police officers.
The video clip shows that Kovilpatti Judicial magistrate Bharathidasan taking notes and observing the experts during the postmortem. The experts can be seen turning the bodies around to mark the injuries- including the raw and red flesh on the backside of Bennicks and bloodstain on the face of his father Jayaraj, which strongly exemplified that they were assaulted by the police officers while they were in their custody for over eight hours in the third week of June.
The video clip, which runs for over five minutes, further shows that the family members of the father and son were crying out after seeing what Jayaraj and Bennicks had gone through and they pleaded the Judicial magistrate for their justice. The family members were allowed inside the room to identify the victims. The video clip has become evidence of confirming what was noted by the government doctors that they sustained injuries in the gluteal region.
In what has come as crucial evidence of asserting it as the torture, the video has been getting widely shared across various platforms which further strengthened the voice for demanding justice to the father and son duo. The Sathankulam police officers - including Inspector Sridhar, who unleashed brutality, have been suspended and lodged under judicial custody in the Madurai central prison.
All the officers have been charged under the grounds of murder and wrongful confinement and while the case was initially probed by the Crime Branch- Criminal Investigative Department (CB-CID) based on the directive of the Madurai High Court, it has now been probed by the special team of CBI. While it was asserted that they had been tortured and beaten to death by the police officers, this video clip has made such assertions true by revealing the dreadful treatment of torture given by the policemen.
On June 19, Jayaraj and Bennicks were taken under the police custody in Sathankulam for allegedly opening the shop beyond the lockdown timings. They were lodged in Kovilpatti prison and on June 22, Bennicks had died at the Kovilpatti government hospital and the next day, his father Jayaraj has also died which stirred the outrage across the state that they had died due to the custodial torture.
While the police mentioned in the FIR that the father and son had protested before the shop and they used harsh language against the officers, the CCTV footage near the shop ruled out police's claims and it revealed nothing such protest happened and they kept their shop open only ten minutes beyond the lockdown timings. Earlier, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami maintained that they had died of health issues. However, this new clip has apparently ruled out such assertions from the government and revealed that Jayaraj and Bennicks were tortured under the police custody.
