Days after IIT student Fathima Latheef had committed suicide, the protests, and the voices have been getting intensified in demanding justice for the student and to uncover the mystery behind her death that was occurred on the premises of reputed and prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Madras on last Saturday.
While addressing the reporters on Tuesday, Fathima Latheef's father Abdul Latheef, by citing her suicide note, had alleged that she could have faced a series of harassment by her department. He stated that his younger daughter Aysha had unlocked the mobile phone which was recovered by the police department in which she found Fathima's suicide note where she exposed the names of the professors who, she accused of harassing her. He expressed his despair that the IIT authorities have allegedly been attempting to meddle the mobile phone which contains the suicide note through their influence by claiming that they might pressurize the police department to tamper the device.
The reports say that on November 8th, 2019 she lastly spoke with her mother and told her that she would be turning off the mobile phone by citing to prepare for her semester examinations and her mother tried to reach her friends as Fathima's phone remained switched off after which the family was contacted by the hostel warden who informed that Fathima had hanged herself to death the next day. The reason behind her death was not known until her mobile phone made a shocking revelation by carrying her suicide note accusing the professors of the Department of Humanities and Social Services for reportedly harassing her.
Fathima's father Abdul Latheef said that he was not aware of what form of harassment she was going through by her department and asserted that he will fight till his last breath to deliver justice for everyone who harassed his daughter, who was a class topper. On Wednesday, the Assistant Commissioner of Police Kotturpuram said that the investigation has been ongoing and eleven witnesses connected to the case have been brought under severe interrogations where the FIR has been booked under Section 174. He stated that everyone concerned, including professors, would be taken for extensive investigations.
With the view of demanding justice for Fathima Latheef, the Campus Front of India (CFI), a student's wing of People Front of India had camped a protest outside the entrance of the IIT Madras on Wednesday evening and were raising slogans urging the police to arrest the professors who were named in her suicide note. The protest that was led by the state secretary of Campus Front of India Mohammad Asraf has demanded the swift and furious action from the police and called on fair inquiry by the CBI. The members of the Students Federation of India had rallied a march in Fathima's hometown of Kollam in Kerala and the march was led by Fathima's sister Aysha Latheef where the members have called the suicide as 'institutional murder'.
