Legendary musician and Rajya Sabha MP Ilaiyaraaja has been drawing flak for not attending even a single day of the recently-held winter session of the Parliament. The musician was nominated to the Rajya Sabha on July 6, 2022, under the window of the presidential nomination.
For the new MP, the winter session was also the first session as a parliamentarian, but shockingly, he didn't turn it as a successful opening of his new venture as he was not present in the house even for a single day during the entire session. According to the Rajya Sabha website, Ilaiyaraaja neither was present in the house nor he participated in any debates.
Ilaiyaraaja took his oath as an MP in July 2022 and so far, it was the only time that he entered the house. When the Parliament convened its winter session in December 2022, it was expected that Ilaiyaraaja would attend his maiden session. However, it has now come to light that the music composer didn't make it to the attendance.
Ilaiyaraaja's nomination to the Rajya Sabha came as a surprise to many and his nomination was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Ilaiyaraaja was among the four people from South India who were nominated to the upper house last July. The other three were - Telugu screenwriter Vijayendra Prasad, renowned athlete PT Usha from Kerala, and Veerendra Heggade, the Dharmasthala president from Karnataka.
Unlike Ilaiyaraaja, the rest three nominated MPs have shown up to the winter session. While PT Usha attended the winter session for all 13 days, Veerandra Heggade and Vijayendra Prasad have attended the session for five days and two days respectively. When announcing the nomination of Ilaiyaraaja, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, "The creative genius of Illaiyaraaja Ji has enthralled people across generations. His works beautifully reflect many emotions. What is equally inspiring is his life journey- he rose from a humble background and achieved so much. Glad that he has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha."
