The much-awaited sequel to the 2018 gangster drama Vada Chennai is finally happening, confirmed director Vetrimaaran at the audio and trailer launch of Raghava Lawrence’s upcoming film Rudhran on Wednesday . The filmmaker, who has delivered back-to-back hits with Asuran and Viduthalai: Part 1, said that he will start working on Vada Chennai 2 after completing his current projects Viduthalai: Part 2 and Vaadivasal.

Vada Chennai 2, which will star Dhanush in the lead role, has been in the pipeline for a long time. The first part of the film, which followed the life of a carrom player Anbu (Dhanush) who gets entangled in the underworld politics of north Chennai, was a critical and commercial success. The film also featured Aishwarya Rajesh, Andrea Jeremiah, Samuthirakani and Kishore among others in pivotal roles.

Vetrimaaran had announced that he had already written the script for the second part. However, due to various reasons, the project got delayed and there were rumours that it had been shelved. Vetrimaaran put an end to all the speculations by announcing that he will take up Vada Chennai 2 after wrapping up Suriya-starrer Vaadivasal, which is based on a popular Tamil novel about Jallikattu.

After filming some scenes for the sequel to his most recent release, Viduthalai: Part 1, the director has stated that he will shift his attention to 'Vada Chennai 2' before the end of 2024.The film, which stars Soori and Vijay Sethupathi in key roles, has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike for its hard-hitting portrayal of police brutality and abuse of power. The film has also grossed around Rs 20 crore in its opening weekend in Tamil Nadu.

Vetrimaaran’s announcement about Vada Chennai 2 has created a huge buzz among Dhanush fans and cinema lovers who have been eagerly waiting for the sequel. The director also thanked producer Kathiresan, who launched him as a filmmaker with Polladavan, for inviting him to the audio launch of Rudhran. Rudhran is an action thriller starring Raghava Lawrence in the lead role and is directed by Kathiresan himself.
