Tamil Nadu Police have arrested an ADMK candidate in the Salem district for attacking a DMK functionary. While the local court has initially ordered the police to remand the ADMK candidate in judicial custody, he was awarded conditional bail later, based on his plea.
According to reports, ADMK candidate Pandian, who was contesting for the post of Councillor in the 58th ward in Salem municipal corporation in the upcoming urban local body polls, had attacked DMK functionary Chinnaiyan (64) over a dispute in the area. Our sources say that there was a block in the drainage in Salem's Annathanapatti, where Pandian was contesting.
However, Chinnaiyan had worked to clear the blockage during which he had blamed the previous ADMK government for not taking any action. When ADMK's Pandian came to the spot, he had asked Chinnaiyan how he can clean the drainage in his area. As their argument went fierce, Pandian had attacked Chinnaiyan and the latter had sustained injuries.
After the attack, Chinnaiyan was taken to the Salem Government Hospital for treatments. His family had filed a complaint against ADMK's Pandian with the Annathanapatti police station. Based on the complaint, the police had arrested Pandian, which had spurred the protests from the ADMK as the party cadres had held a roadblock before the Commissioner office and before the Annathanapatti station during which they had condemned the arrest of the ADMK candidate.
Police Commissioner Mohan Raj and the team had dispersed them and taken Pandian to the court. The police had produced Pandian before Justice Pon Pandian for taking the ADMK candidate in judicial custody. During the proceedings, ADMK candidate Pandian had told that he was suffering from chest pain. After recording his statement, the court had ordered the police to take Pandian under judicial custody till March 1 and to provide medical treatments to him in the government hospital.
While the police had taken Pandian to the hospital for a health check-up, the ADMK advocates had filed a bail petition of Pandian. His bail plea had come to the hearing on Wednesday and during the hearing, the police had objected the bail for Pandian. However, the court had granted Pandian bail and ordered him to adhere to the condition of appearing in the court at 10 am every day and put his signature until further orders.
