Tamil Nadu opposition party DMK and its coalition have been soaring high in the rural local bodies, reveals the counting that has been underway for the second consecutive day as the local bodies in 27 districts of Tamil Nadu are about to fill the vacancy that has been left vacant for the past three years.
It's the first rural local body elections of the state after the demise of the state's top political leaders Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi and the counting of the two-phased polls that took place on December 27 and December 30, 2019, respectively has been exposing that the DMK party has more strongholds in the local bodies that the ruling ADMK party which largely trails. The vote counting began on Thursday and the results pouring since Friday morning have shown that the DMK alliance leads in 2,303 of 5067 panchayat Unions and a similar trend was seen in the vote-counting of district panchayats where DMK leads in 268 out of 515 district panchayats.
The early morning prediction that was highlighted on Thursday had indicated that the ruling ADMK party would be able to flag its presence in the rural bodies in the local polls that conducted for the first time in eight years. As the vote-counting has hit its second day, the State Election Commission (SEC) has said that a total of 19,734 candidates have won for the posts of Village Panchayat Ward member while 1,141 people were elected for the posts of Village Panchayat President and 208 members were elected for Panchayat Union Ward Member posts.
On the other hand, despite leading in the constituencies in Kongu belt and Salem district, the ADMK party has been stooping low in the districts like Tuticorin that hosted the protests against the Sterlite Copper plant and Kanyakumari and many districts across the Central Tamil Nadu are seemingly against of the ADMK party as these districts had diminished the hope of ADMK which eyed to enhance its strongholds across the state with just having one year for the state legislative elections. With the final results only be declared on Friday, the rural local body polls are likely to present a huge setback for ADMK.
On Thursday, DMK President and state opposition leader M K Stalin had approached the Madras High Court by citing the irregularities in the vote countings as Stalin accused that the counting centers have been dominated by the ADMK agents with the help of the authorities and police personnel and added that the authorities had failed to declare the results of the constituencies where DMK has won.
The party cadres of DMK have started celebrating across the state as the results have been pouring in favor of the opposition party. On the other side of the aisle, Naam Tamilar Katchi led by Seeman has seen unwelcoming results at its bank as out of 5067 panchayat union ward member posts, Naam Tamilar has managed to win only one seat in Kanyakumari district and despite the solacing victory in one seat, the drastic decline of the ten-year-old party had spurred multiple speculations across the state on its political base and in most of the constituencies, Seeman's party had got very lesser votes comparing to the independent candidates.
