Tamil Nadu goes for the first phase of the local body elections!

Finally, after three years of delays and postponements, the state of Tamil Nadu goes for the local body elections which are currently underway in the rural local bodies. With accord to the notification of the state's election commission, the local body polls would be rolling out in two phases in rural bodies of 27 districts excluding the newly created districts that were mapped recently by the state government and on Friday, the first phase of polling began at 7 am and would conclude by 5 pm.

The first phase of the polling would be electing 37,830 panchayat members, 260 ward members of district panchayats, 2,546 panchayat unions and in the wake of the elections, the state government had dispatched more than 60,000 police personnel across the state to enhance the security in the polling stations of the rural bodies. The first phase of the polls would be concluding on Friday after which the second phase of the elections would take place on December 30th in which the rest of the local bodies of the 27 districts will vote for its representatives.

The registered votes would go for counting on January 2nd, 2020. The reports have stated that the first phase would see the queues of about 1.30 crore people across the state and as far as the second phase is concerned, the state would be electing 255 ward members of the district panchayats, 2,544 panchayat union members and 38,916 rural panchayat members.

On December 6th, 2019 the Supreme court had directed the state election commission conduct the local body polls across the state except for the nine districts and the court has awarded the State Election Commission with four months' time to complete the delimitation of wards and reservation of seats in the nine new districts.

Recently, the state government of Tamil Nadu had created five new districts from four big districts - Kallakurichi from Villupuram, Tenkasi from Tirunelveli, Chengalpattu from Kancheepuram and Tirupattur, Ranipet from Vellore and these nine districts won't go for the local body polls at any of the phase since the delimitation of the wards and reservations in these districts had not been conducted so far.
