26-year-old Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has opened the country's medal account after winning the Silver medal in the women's 49kg weightlifting competition on Saturday
Chanu has also become the second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari, who won the Bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
US Diver Marjorie Gestring remains the youngest individual Olympic champion after winning the Gold Medal in the 3m springboard at the 1936 Berlin Games at 13 years and 268 days.
Chanu said, "It's really a dream come true for me. I would like to dedicate this medal to my country and would like to thank a billion prayers of all Indians which were with me during this journey."
As Chanu has created history, India has opened its medal account on the very first day of the Olympics amid encountering some disappointing start from the country's shooting campaign.
21-year-old Qian Yang has won the Gold Medal in the women's 10-meter air rifle competition in which India's Elavenil Valarivan and Apurvi Chandela had failed to qualify to the finals.
But, Elavenil's good start had begun to erode in the remaining rounds and her points dropped down further in the final stretch, in the fifth and sixth series.
