From Suriya's 'Soorarai Pottru' to Dhoni's 'Whistle Podu': What India spoke on Twitter in 2020?

Twitter has been growing significantly as one of the vital social media sites in India as more number of young generations are getting exposed to the US-based micro-blogging site, which has become a tool for Tweeple to virtually express their thoughts and opinions on various channels from politics, cinema, entertainment, lifestyle, and sports. According to Statista, India is the third leading country in the world on the number of Twitter users by having nearly 19 million users as of October 2020 after the United States and Japan. 

When the Indian government had imposed the unprecedented experiment of the nationwide lockdown which put millions into their residences amid battling the COVID-19 outbreak, the confined people -particularly youngsters developed a new relationship with the internet, streaming sites, and social media platforms. As the sequel of the lockdown, India largely spoke virtually through computers and social media platforms which connected millions while in the confinement. With India had gone online throughout the year 2020, and when we are nearing to close one of the most unwelcomed years, Twitter India has now revealed what India spoke during 2020 on Twitter, which covers most of the channels. 

Twitter India has released the most tweeted hashtags in India during 2020 under the hashtag of #ThisHappened2020 and the report from the social media giant had rightly captured what was in the mindset of Tweeple in India and how they spent the entire year. The hashtags were analyzed and placed in different categories like sports, movies, entertainments, emojis, and more. Twitter had unveiled the results on Tuesday, which arose the mixtures of surprise and shock. 

According to Twitter India, Indian Cricket captain Virat Kohli's tweet announcing his wife Anushka Sharma's pregnancy has become the most liked Tweet in India in 2020. On August 27, Virat Kohli took to Twitter and said, "And then, we were three! Arriving Jan 2021". He had posted a picture with Anushka Sharma standing next to him and till Tuesday- December 8, this tweet has got 644.2k likes and counting. Actor Vijay's surprising selfie with his fans has become the most retweeted Tweet in India. Vijay took to Twitter and posted his selfie and wrote, "Thank you Neyveli", to thank his fans who gathered in the Neyveli shooting spot to see him in the midst of the 'Master' shooting. 

Vijay had posted the tweet on February 10, ahead of COVID-19 lockdown, and as of Tuesday, his tweet has got over 160.6k retweets, becoming the most retweeted Tweet of 2020. Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan's tweet announcing that he has tested positive for the COVID-19 viral infection has become the most quoted tweet of 2020. On July 11, senior Bachchan took to Twitter and said that he had tested positive for COVID19 and requested those who come in close proximity with him to get tested and as of Tuesday, his tweet has got 43.6k quote tweets, becoming the highest in this category. 

In the category of sports, #IPL2020 has become the most tweeted sports hashtag, which revealed how India had enjoyed and keenly watched the cricket league that held in the Arab Emirates. Following #IPL2020, CSK's signature slogan 'WhistlePodu', which was used by the CSK fans, had become the second most tweeted sports hashtag in India and the rank was made possible by the expectations from the fans and flawed performances from the team. #TeamIndia has ranked third in the most tweeted sports hashtags in India. 

2020 has become complicated for the Indian movie industry as the COVID-19 outbreak had closed the theaters and halted the release of new movies. However, the movie industry had found new feet to walk -OTT platforms and the sites had Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+Hotstar had released dozens of movies across all languages and Twitter has now revealed the top movies India had spoken about during 2020. Late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput's last movie 'DilBechara' has become the most tweeted movie hashtags in 2020.

DilBechara was released on Disney+Hotstar and the movie had got trended nationwide in a similar scale of trends that called for Justice for the actor, who committed suicide in June 2020. Following DilBechara, Suriya's 'Soorarai Pottru' has become the second most tweeted movie hashtags in India in 2020 as Soorarai Pottru has become the first big Tamil movie to get released on the OTT platform. The movie got released on November 12 on Amazon Prime and it has got a massive reception from the audience and the movie has been counting numbers of fresh views. The movie had become very significant in Suriya's career. 

Following Soorarai Pottru, Tollywood star Mahesh Babu's 'Sarileru Neekevvaru' has become the third most tweeted movie hashtags in India in 2020. The movie got released on 11 January 2020 and it had earned Rs 260 crore at the box office. While Prime Minister Modi's tweet on lighting lamps at his official residence was the most retweeted political tweet whereas MS Dhoni's tweet thanking PM Modi was the most retweeted sports tweet. While #COVID19 was the most used current affairs hashtag in 2020, the gangrape incident in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh had also become one of the most tweeted topics in India.

At a global stage, the tweet about the death of 'Black Panther' star Chadwick Boseman has become the most liked tweet in 2020. The Boseman family had on August 28 shared the news of his death after his secret battle with colon cancer and the tweet had received more than 7.5 million likes on Twitter and the post was also retweeted and quote tweeted the most during the year and along with the death of Boseman, the demise of Bollywood star Rajput had become the most talked about moments on Twitter in 2020. 

In a press release, Manish Maheswari, who is the Managing Director of Twitter India said, "Being the year it has been, conversation on Twitter in 2020 was unique. From the fight against the COVID-19 global pandemic, rejoicing in celebratory moments, standing up for those communities impacted by the pandemic, to bonding over rediscovered shows, interests, and memes, India came together beautifully on Twitter this year".
