In what has become another feather in the cap, Suriya starred 'Soorarai Pottru' has etched a remarkable feat that no other regional movies have achieved. Soorarai Pottru is the crucial movie that massively opened gates for the cinema industry to reach audiences when the theaters were closed in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak and the lockdown triggered by the pandemic. 

Soorarai Pottru was the first big Tamil movie to skip the theaters and get released directly on the OTT platform. Though the movie was made for a theatrical release, the indefinite closures of theaters had led the movie team to release the movie on Amazon Prime. Amid the objections from the theater associations, the movie had reached directly to the hands of the audiences, setting a significant precedent. 

Soorarai Pottru was released on November 12, two days ahead of Diwali 2020, on Amazon Prime worldwide. The movie has received a massive reception across and beyond the borders and it had garnered a decent fashion of reactions with many commending the storyline and screenplay and audacity of Suriya for his brave and versatile acting and for deciding to release the movie on the OTT platform. 

As the movie had reached directly to the fans, Soorarai Pottru had won hearts for being a perfect entertainer cooked with an adequate amount of ingredients. The movie has earned an overwhelming welcome from the fans and added a strong feather in its cap by becoming one of the most successful movies in 2020 and an important movie in Suriya's career. Adding another feather to its cap,  Soorarai Pottru has now become the most-watched regional language film in the history of Amazon Prime in India. 

Soorarai Pottru is the only movie to achieve this feat in the history of the OTT giant, which had displayed how magnificently the movie has reached and stayed with the audiences. Amazon Prime India has confirmed the development that the movie has become the most-watch regional language film and ever since the feat came to light, the ardent fans of Suriya have been trending the news on social media and celebrating the actor for his commitment to the industry.

Soorarai Pottru is directed by 'Irudhi Sottru' fame Sudha Kongara and produced by actor Suriya and Guneet Monga, under their respective banners 2D Entertainment and Sikhya Entertainment respectively. The movie is based on the events from the life of Simplify Deccan Founder Captain GR Gopinath. While Suriya played the lead role, Aparna Balamurali had played a female lead, and Paresh Rawal, Urvashi, Mohan Babu, Karunas, and Kaali Venkat had acted in important roles. 

GV Prakash Kumar had composed the music while cinematography and editing were done by Niketh Bommireddy and Sathish Suriya respectively. Soorarai Pottru was selected as one among ten Indian films to be screened under the Best Foreign Film Category at the 78th Golden Globe Awards. The film has been made available for screening at the 93rd Academy Awards for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Score, and other categories.

Soorarai Pottru was on the list of top three movies in 2020 under the category of Most Tweeted movie hashtags. While Sushant Singh Rajput's 'Dil Bechara' was the first on the list, Soorarai Pottru was the second while Mahesh Babu's 'Sarileru Neekevvaru' was the third on the list.
