Shocking in TN: This 72-year-old woman was confined at her house for ten years by her sons!

In a shocking piece of news, a 72-year-old woman was confined for ten years at her house by her two sons in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. She has finally been freed from the hostile captivity after her confinement has come to light. Her two sons had failed to offer care for their mother and they had only provided her food once a week, pushing the woman to rely on the help of neighbours.

According to reports, a 72-year-old septuagenarian named Gnanajothi is a resident of Kavery Nagar in Thanjavur. Her husband had worked in Doordarshan and passed away in 2009. After the demise of her husband, Gnanajothi was all under the care of her daughter, who also had died two years after the demise of Gnanajothi's husband. After losing her daughter, the elderly woman had gone into the care of her two sons- Shanmugasundaram and Venkatesan.

While Shanmugasundaram is a retired police officer and lives nearby his mother Gnanajothi, Venkatesan works as a technical employee in Doordarshan and lives in Pudukottai. However, both of them were not willing to take care of their mother and they had locked the front door of the house outside by confining their mother in the house. They had then supplied food and biscuits to their mother once a week. It has been the life of Gnanajothi for the past ten years.

While she was left out by their sons, some of her neighbours were helping her through the window. They had provided her with food and drinking water and they had attended to her whenever she called. Now, the confinement of this 72-year-old woman had gone to the attention of the social welfare department. It has been reported that the social welfare department's women's helpline number 181 had received a call about the woman and her condition.

Based on the call, two staff members Vimala and Divya had on Friday - April 15 rushed to Gnanajothi's house in Kavery Nagar along with the police officers. With the help of the police, the officials had broken the lock of the door and went inside the house. They were shocked to see Gnanjothi lying naked on the bed and she was suffering from her ailing health condition.

After dressing her up, the social welfare department officials had rescued Gnanajothi and admitted her to the hospital. The officials said that she will be provided with psychiatric treatment. It has been reported that the district's social welfare department has lodged a complaint with the local police demanding action against the two sons under the sections of the Senior Citizen Act 2007. The police will disclose their report to the district collector based on their inquiry.
