While the Tamil Nadu ruling ADMK and Opposition DMK are in the race to take over the reign, Seeman, who is the Chief Coordinator of Naam Tamilar Katchi, runs faster than the decades-old Dravidian parties with announcing the party candidates for the major constituencies in the Delta Belt of Tamil Nadu even before the Election Commission of India announces the dates for the Tamil Nadu assembly polls.
Giving a major shock to the leaders of both Dravidian rivals, the development has come when both the ADMK and DMK are still steering to finalize the alliance and seat-sharing with the allied parties. Seeman has unveiled the first set of candidates of the Naam Tamilar Katchi on Friday in the Thanjavur district and his announcement has stirred a political debate on how Seeman would impact the Dravidian parties with the lack of potent leadership.
According to reports, in the event that was held in Thanjavur, Seeman had announced 35 candidates of the party in the first phase, and these candidates would be contesting in the districts like Thanjavur, Trichy, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayilduthurai, Pudukottai, Ariyalur, and Perambalur. Through making a big announcement, Seeman had stunned ADMK and DMK and shown that his party would contest in the polls independently.
Seeman has announced the first set of candidates even before the Election Commission of India announces the dates of the election. It has been expected that Tamil Nadu would go for the assembly polls between April - May. Despite the controversies, Naam Tamilar Katchi has been displaying it as Tamil National Party and it has been contesting in the polls independently and yielding the growing voter base in the state. When Seeman's party contested in the 2016 assembly polls, it has written history in Tamil Nadu after becoming the first party in the state to provide a ticket for a transgender candidate to contest in the polls.
In 2016, Naam Tamilar Katchi contested in all the 234 constituencies independently, and though the party had lost all the constituencies with Seeman losing the deposit, the party scored 1.1% votes in 2016, which was ahead of MDMK, VCK, and Communists. In 2019, Naam Tamilar Katchi had contested in the Lok Sabha polls independently in Tamil Nadu and though the party was washed away by the DMK wave, the party had cemented an increase in the vote share than in 2016 as in the Lok Sabha polls, the party has got 3.9% vote share in Tamil Nadu.
With witnessing a growth in the vote share, Naam Tamilar Katchi has been preparing to contest in the upcoming assembly polls with the agenda of retaining the voter base and yield more votes from those who voice against the DMK and ADMK. With Seeman announcing the 35 candidates in the initial phase, it has been expected that he would unveil the rest of the candidates before February. Seeman's announcement of candidates had shocked and troubled the ADMK and DMK and it had shown that the race is getting heated and this time, Tamil Nadu would witness many contenders in the race to power including the Dravidian parties, and it's alliance, Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam, and Naam Tamilar Katchi.
