The Tamil Nadu political landscape has lost one of its brightest stars, as Vijayakanth, the founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) party, breathed his last on Thursday. The veteran actor, who was popularly known as ‘Captain’ among his fans and followers, succumbed to age-related ailments at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 71.
Vijayakanth’s demise has left a huge void in the state’s politics, as he was seen as a potential alternative to the dominant parties of the state. He had a loyal base of supporters, especially among the youth and the rural masses, who admired his helping tendency and courage. His peers and rivals also respected him, who acknowledged his contribution to the state’s development and welfare.
One of the most heartfelt tributes came from his close friend and fellow actor Rajinikanth, who visited Vijayakanth’s residence to pay his last respects. Rajinikanth, who had recently announced his entry into politics, said that he was deeply saddened by the loss of his dear friend, whom he called an ‘incredible man of spirit’.

Despite initial hopes for his recovery, seeing him in the general assembly left Rajinikanth feeling saddened and somewhat hopeless. He believes that had Vijayakanth been healthy, he would have been a strong force in Tamil Nadu politics. Rajinikanth hopes that his friend's soul may rest in peace.
Rajinikanth also praised Vijayakanth’s leadership qualities and his popular moniker ‘Captain’. “Captain is a fitting name for him. He was a true leader who inspired millions of people. He was not afraid to speak his mind and stand up for his principles. He was a man of action and vision. Long live the name Vijayakanth,” Rajinikanth said.
Vijayakanth, who started his career as an actor in 1979, went on to star in over 150 films, mostly in the action genre. He was known for his roles as a vigilante, police, rebel, and patriot, which earned him a huge fan following. He also won several awards for acting skills and social service.
Vijayakanth’s health deteriorated in the past few years, due to various complications. He was admitted to the hospital several times, and underwent severe treatment as well. Vijayakanth’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief and condolences from various quarters, including the state and central governments, political parties, film industry. His funeral was held on Friday, with full state honours. Thousands of his fans and followers thronged the streets to catch a glimpse of their beloved leader and bid him a final farewell.
