Film stunt choreographer - Actor Kanal Kannan must remain in judicial detention till August 26 ordered by Lakshmi, the judge of the Egmore Criminal Court. He was arrested after his disparaging comment at the Periyar statue at the entrance to the Srirangam shrine in a meeting conducted in Maduravayal, Chennai, which was brought to social media and the video went viral.
Kannan was also a functionary of Hindu Munnani, who called for the demolition of the EVR Periyar statue installed near the Srirangam temple. Reflecting on the arrest, the Hindu Munnani said that a protest over Kannan's detention will be organized. Defending Kannan, K Annamalai, the president of the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit, asserted that if 1,000 persons were polled in front of the Srirangam temple, every single one of them would indicate they opposed the statue's placement.
The Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam has filed a complaint to the local police under Sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), and 505 (1) (b) (causing fear or alarm to the public) of the Indian Penal Code, and also the Principal Sessions Court denied his request for anticipatory bail, and police were looking for him. On Monday, He was detained by police in Puducherry and brought to the city and the judge has ordered Kanal Kannan to be kept in judicial custody till August 26.
