Recently, veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram had met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, which would probably be the first meeting between two leaders in months. The visuals from the meeting had suggested that it was constructive. Several speculations were rife around the meeting with a claim that Chidambaram met Stalin on a courtesy call to exchange greetings after the victory in the urban local body polls.
Amid such speculations, the reports say that Chidambaram met MK Stalin with a big plan and discussed with him to unfold it in the DMK alliance. The timing of the meeting had sparked assumptions that Chidambaram is making moves to retain his chair in Rajya Sabha through Tamil Nadu. Chidambaram is a Congress MP in Rajya Sabha and for his current tenure, he was elected from the state of Maharashtra.
As the Rajya Sabha elections are getting closer and his term is nearing its end, Chidambaram had met Stalin to seek his support for his candidature through voting him for the upper house. The former union minister had expressed his willingness to secure a nomination to Rajya Sabha with the support of the DMK. According to reports, at least half a dozen Rajya Sabha seats would be falling vacant in Tamil Nadu in two months.
Through its landslide majority, DMK can leniently win all these seats, had the election held individually. As Congress is enjoying alliance in DMK, P Chidambaram, whose term ends in June 2022, has been planning to re-enter the house from Tamil Nadu. However, MK Stalin didn't give any assurance to the former minister and when polls are nearing, Congress's top leadership would be speaking with the DMK to reserve a seat for P Chidambaram.
On the other hand, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Chief KS Alagiri is also looking to enter Rajya Sabha as there would be a change of guard in Tamil Nadu soon. Alagiri is making moves in Delhi to secure an assurance from the Gandhis about winning a seat from the DMK. As DMK is going to reign most of the local bodies in the state, the reports say that the talks for the Rajya Sabha polls and the candidatures would begin next month.
