Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 2: A thunderous blockbuster that rakes with this whopping collection on worldwide

The second installment of Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan, based on the novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy, has set the box office on fire with its spectacular collections. The film, which was released on April 28 in five languages across the world, has outshone its predecessor by garnering Rs 300 crore mark worldwide.  The makers on Monday shared the whopping milestone collection on their official social media handle.

Ponniyin Selvan 2, which chronicles the rise and fall of the Chola dynasty and its legendary ruler Raja Raja Chola I, has won the hearts of critics and audiences alike for its majestic visuals, riveting performances, and mesmerizing music by AR Rahman. The film boasts of a star-studded cast that includes Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha and others.

According to trade reports, Ponniyin Selvan 2 has grossed over Rs 170 crore in India in its first 10 days and is expected to cross Rs 200 crore soon. In Tamil Nadu alone, the film has made more than Rs 100 crore, becoming the 15th film to achieve this feat in the state. The film has also performed well in other states like Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 has received a warm response in the overseas markets and has collected over Rs 100 crore in countries like USA, UK, UAE, Australia, and Singapore. The film is likely to join the elite club of Rs 300 crore worldwide by the end of this week.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 is a worthy adaptation of the classic novel and a fitting sequel to the first part, which was released in September 2022 and earned over Rs 500 crore at the box office worldwide. The film features a stellar supporting cast that includes Sarathkumar, Parthiban, Jayaram, Prabhu, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Vikram Prabhu and Rahman.

The makers of Ponniyin Selvan have announced that the film’s original soundtrack will be released on the 100th day of its theatrical run. The film is expected to have a digital premiere on OTT platforms by June second week.
