While both the Dravidian parties of Tamil Nadu are still in the process of finalizing the alliance for the upcoming assembly polls, the Naam Tamilar party has taken a major leap and advancing much forward than the top parties in the state. On Monday, the Tamil national party has announced that it will contest independently in the polls, and through the announcement, the state is progressing towards the better prospect of witnessing five fronts.
Seeman's Naam Tamilar party was surfaced with the speculations of forming an alliance with Dhinakaran's AMMK after Seeman surprisingly met VK Sasikala recently. However, Seeman has now put an end to such rounds of talks by unveiling the announcement of contesting in the polls independently in all the 234 constituencies. Seeman will field the candidates in all the constituencies and setting up a precedent, the party has decided to field men and women on an equal scale.
According to reports, Naam Tamilar Katchi will be introducing all 234 candidates at a public event in YMCA, Royapettah on March 7. The party has decided to field 50% women candidates- 117 women and 117 men in total. The party is also ready to field transgenders if they show their willingness to contest in the polls. The reports say that the party is also considering fielding Dalit candidates in general constituencies.
Naam Tamilar Katchi has been planning to field Dalit candidates in the general constituencies with the view of ensuring quality in the candidates. The announcement from Naam Tamilar Katchi has come at a high time when the state is just one month away from the assembly polls and when the Dravidian parties are observing deadlock towards reaching a deal over seat-sharing and constituencies.
In what would become a significant fashion in the state legislative elections, Naam Tamilar Katchi will become the first party in Tamil Nadu to field equal strength of men and women. Seeman will be introducing all the candidates at a public event in Jayalalithaa's way. It must be noted that late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had many times introduced the candidates on the same stage. In line with her legacy, Seeman will be introducing the candidates for the upcoming assembly polls.
Seeman has been emerging as one of the crucial parties in Tamil Nadu amid consistent defeats. In the 2016 assembly polls, Naam Tamilar Katchi had contested 231 seats out of 234 seats. However, candidates had lost their deposit in 229 seats and received 1.06% of the voter share in the elections. According to the data of the Election Commission of India, the party has got a total of 4,58,007 votes in the 2016 assembly polls.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Naam Tamilar Katchi had contested independently in 40 Lok Sabha Constituencies - 39 in Tamil Nadu and 1 from Puducherry. Eventually, all the candidates in 40 constituencies had lost in the polls. Seeman's camp has been hoping to have a political breakthrough in the upcoming assembly polls. Tamil Nadu will be going to the single-phase polls on April 6 and the votes will be counted on May 2 during which the winner will be announced. The state will likely witness four to five fronts in the polls - ADMK and its alliance, DMK and its alliance, Kamal Haasan- Sarathkumar, Dhinakaran's AMMK, and Seeman's Naam Tamilar Katchi.
