As it happened: Actor Prakash Raj meets this Chief Minister...Is he going to get elected to Rajya Sabha?

Popular actor Prakash Raj is seemingly getting ready for his next major leap in politics as the signs are clearly visible that he would be elected to the Rajya Sabha from Telangana. The speculations regarding the same are rife after he held a meeting with Telangana Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao. The plan is being simmered behind the screens as the poll announcement has been made by the Election Commission.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has on Thursday announced the schedule for the biennial election for two vacancies in Rajya Sabha from Telangana. The chief electoral body has also issued notification for a byelection for one seat from the state to the Upper House of the Parliament. Ahead of the official notification, Prakash Raj has met Chandrasekhar Rao at the latter's Erravalli farmhouse on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The meeting has become the talk of the town and spurred speculations that the actor, who is a staunch critic of the BJP, will be elected from Telangana. As the official notification has now been issued for the elections, it is expected that an announcement regarding Prakash Raj's candidacy would be made soon. On the other hand, the BJP is planning to field veteran leader Subramanian Swamy to elect him to the Rajya Sabha from Telangana.

However, as per the existing strength in the assembly, the ruling Chandrasekhar Rao's party will win all three seats unopposed and the trend remains the same in the chance of electing the candidates. Telangana has seven Rajya Sabha seats and all of them are held by the ruling Telangana Rashtriya Samithi (TRS). As per the election notification, the last date for filing the nominations for the byelection to a Rajya Sabha seat, which was vacated by TRS MP Banda Prakash, is May 19.

The polling will be held on May 30. According to reports, the Election Commission has announced the schedule for two other regular vacancies in the state for the Rajya Sabha as the incumbents will be demitting the office on June 21. As per the notification, the elections for these two seats will be held on June 10. The nation will be witnessing the Rajya Sabha polls for 57 seats from 15 states including Tamil Nadu.
