The aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, unleashed its fury on the south Indian coast, especially Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu. The cyclone, which was the strongest to hit the region in over a decade, brought heavy rains, strong winds, and storm surges, causing widespread damage and disruption.

The city, which is home to over 10 million people, witnessed severe waterlogging, power outages, and communication breakdowns. Many areas were cut off from the rest of the city, and thousands of people were stranded in their homes without food, water, or basic amenities. Some of the worst affected areas were Tambaram, Pallavaram, Chrompet, Velachery, and Perungalathur.

Many people took to social media to seek help and share their plight. Some posted videos and photos of the flooded streets, submerged vehicles, and collapsed buildings. Others appealed for rescue teams, relief materials, and medical assistance. Some also shared information about the availability of shelters, food, and water in their localities.

Among the voices that emerged from the chaos was that of actor Vijay, who is leading Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, and influential stars in Tamil cinema. Vijay, who has a huge fan following across the state, took to X and wrote, “Due to the heavy rains of Cyclone Michaung in Chennai and its suburbs, the public including children, women and the elderly are suffering a lot,

"There are reports that thousands of people are suffering without water and food and without adequate basic facilities. There are still many voices on social media asking for help to rescue from the flooded area. At this time, I kindly request all the Makkal Iyakkam administrators to involve themselves as volunteers in the rescue work carried out by the government to help the people in the affected areas.”

Makkal Iyakkam, which means People’s Movement, is a social welfare organization founded by Vijay in 2009. The organization has been involved in various charitable and humanitarian activities, such as providing education, health care, and livelihood support to the needy. Vijay’s appeal to his fans and followers was met with an overwhelming response, as many of them joined the rescue and relief efforts in different parts of the city.

The government, on its part, has been working round the clock to restore normalcy in the city. The Chennai Corporation, the civic body of the city, has deployed hundreds of workers and machines to clear the waterlogged roads and drains. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has been trying to restore the power supply in the affected areas.

The Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Authority has been coordinating with the National Disaster Response Force, the Indian Navy, the Indian Air Force, and other agencies to carry out rescue and evacuation operations. 

According to the latest reports, the situation in Chennai is gradually improving, as the water levels are receding and the power supply is being restored. The weather department has predicted light rains on December 8 and 9, but no major rain activity is expected for the next 7-10 days. The city, which has faced several natural calamities in the past, slowly recovering from the latest ordeal, with the help of the government, the civil society, and celebrities.
