India has scripted a history as it is all set to introduce the unseen and unexplored region of the Moon to the entire world. India's lunar mission 'Chandrayaan -3' has on Wednesday - August 23 made a soft and safe touchdown on the Moon's south pole in an expected descending trajectory. Through the successful landing, India is has now become the first nation to land on the south side of the Moon and has remarkably evolved the country's space agency to new heights.
At 6.03 pm on Wednesday, the Chandrayaan -3's Vikram Lander Module (LM) has landed near the Moon's south pole and while India has become the first country to land on the south pole, it has also become the fourth country after the United States, the erstwhile Soviet Union, and China in the club of landing a spacecraft on the Moon. In the mission of landing on the south pole, the country has failed its previous launch 'Chandrayaan 2' in 2019 after its lander crashed on the Moon's surface.
Now, after four years, the mission has been accomplished and we are just days away to know what lies beneath the south pole of the Moon. In its pilot lunar mission- Chandrayaan-1, India found that Moon has a frozen-water under its surface. With the successful landing of Chandrayaan -3, we can expect that more surprise findings. As the lander module descended towards the Moon on Wednesday, all eyes were on its path as the nation was waiting with a bated breath for its touchdown.
Officially announcing the successful landing on the Moon's south pole, India's premier space agency Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) took to social media and wrote, "Chandrayaan-3 Mission: 'India, I reached my destination and you too!: Chandrayaan 3. Chandrayaan -3 has successfully soft-landed on the Moon. Congratulations, India."
While Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined virtually for an event as he is in South Africa to attend the BRICS summit, Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh joined the ISRO scientists in the agency's Bengaluru office to witness the live touchdown. Millions of people joined the live event online and witnessed and celebrated the historical moment of the country's great leap in its space odyssey.
After the touchdown, ISRO Chairman Somnath said, "India is on the Moon." Addressing the event virtually, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "When we see such historic moments it makes us very proud. This is the dawn of new India. No country has reached there (the South Pole of the Moon) before. With the hard work of our scientists we have reached there." "India's successful Moon mission is not just India's alone. This success belongs to all of humanity", he added.
Chandrayaa-3 Project Director Veeramuthuvel said, "We have become the first country to go near the South Pole of the Moon." Congratulating his team on the success of the mission, ISRO chairman Somnath further said, "Thank you everyone for the support...We learned a lot from our failure and today we succeeded. We are looking forward to the next 14 days from now for Chandrayaan-3."
Following the success, the entire nation, from the army personnel, political leaders, children, and the common public have been celebrating the moment and a flock of celebrities are also pouring praises on ISRO for creating history. From the other side of the world, it is a wish from NASA's chief that's now going viral. The administrator of NASA, which is the space agency of the United States, Bill Nelson wrote on social media, "Congratulations ISRO on your successful Chandrayaan-3 lunar South Pole landing and congratulations to India on being the 4th country to successfully soft-land a spacecraft on the Moon. We’re glad to be your partner on this mission".
