The Sadras police department in the Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu has arrested a former PMK functionary and two others on Monday - March 14 in connection to harassing a 17-year-old girl. The arrest has come after the girl has released a video in which she had addressed to Chief Minister MK Stalin about the horror she and her 15-year-old sister are facing by these three men.
According to reports, Dinesh is one of the accused and he is the former PMK functionary while the other two arrested are Ellappan and Gopalakrishnan. All three and the girl belong to the Vanniyar community. In the video that has been going viral, the girl says that she and her sister are terrified to even leave their house at Mel Perumal Cheri near Kalpakkam. She further said that if they step outside, there were stopped by Dinesh and Ellappan, who ask the sisters, "You have been excommunicated and how can you come out?".
The girl said that they are unable to even walk down the street and they are scared after the accused had threatened to set their home ablaze while the sisters sleep. Breaking down in tears, the 17-year-old girl stated that the continuous harassment by the accused had severely impacted their mental health and it has pushed them to commit suicide. In the video, she alleges that the All Womens' Police Station in Mahabalipuram didn't come for help.
The girl says, "They (police) told us we would not be harassed anymore. However, they did not take any measures to help us. We don't trust the police anymore. We don't even feel like living anymore. If we die, only Dinesh and Ellappan are responsible. By the time you (CM Stalin) watch his video, we don't know if we would be alive. Please help us."
As the video has gone viral, Sadras police had visited the girl's residence at 3 am on Monday and the police had filed a case against the accused under section 8 - imprisonment from three to five years, section 9 -aggravated sexual assault, section 11 - sexual assault upon a child, and section 12 - imprisonment up to three years and fine of the POCSO Act.
The police had also slapped sections 294(b) - obscenity, 323 - punishment for voluntarily causing hurt, and 506(1) - criminal intimidation of the Indian Penal Code against the accused. The SP office in Chengalpattu has said that the matter is under investigation. The police had arrested three people - Dinesh, Ellappan, and Gopalakrishnan in connection to the case.
On Monday, Chengalpattu SP Aravindhan took to Twitter and wrote, "Regarding a viral video of minor girl in Sadras PS limit, an fir has been registered under relevant provisions of IPC and pocso act and investigation are going on. I request everyone not to circulate the video in social media as it reveals the identity of the minor girl."
