The political crisis has been deepening in the ADMK as the sequel of the faltering leadership, intra-party furore, and electoral fiasco. In what has become a never-ending drama between the current leadership - Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) and O Panneerselvam (OPS), and VK Sasikala to win the full command of the decades-old party, the fight has been escalating, which left the party well-wishers and cadres on a lurch and had plunged their political future.
The current leaders had on Wednesday brought an overhaul to the party to retain their leadership amid a tussle between the senior leaders. As EPS and OPS had introduced a change in bye-laws of the party, they go for intra-party elections on December 7 to continue their command in the party, by shutting doors to VK Sasikala as the party's executive committee had agreed to relinquish the post of General Secretary of the party, that was briefly held by Sasikala, four years ago, after the demise of J Jayalalithaa.
While the current leaders had closed doors for Sasikala, she has shown no sign of dropping her political comeback as she had assured her supporters and ADMK cadres that she will definitely come and everything in the party will change soon. However, though Sasikala is taking efforts to take over the party, her next big move against EPS and OPS would be not regaining her command in the party, but to regain her command in Jayalalithaa's palatial residence in Poes Garden, Chennai.
After the demise of Jayalalithaa in 2016, her residence 'Veda Nilayam' was left to live with its legacy, yet it was at headlines several times during the EPS regime. The previous EPS regime had decided to change Jayalalithaa's residence as her memorial and the government had possessed it under its control and begun the works of conversion. While the rulers had claimed that the memorial was to honour Jayalalithaa, the activists said that the EPS regime had decided to make the residence a government's property to barricade Sasikala's entry and command.
However, Jayalalithaa's niece Deepa and nephew Deepak had approached the High Court claiming that they are the legal heirs of Jayalalithaa and the residence should legally come to them. Both of them had fought against the ordinance passed by the EPS regime over possessing the residence and after episodes of hearings, the High Court had on November 24 delivered its verdict that repealed the ordinance passed by the EPS regime to acquire Jayalalithaa's residence. It also had ordered the Chennai Collector to provide the possession of the Poes Garden residence to Deepa and Deepak in three weeks.
For Deepa and Deepak, their route is clear and they are the new owners of Jayalalithaa's residence but our sources say that their ownership won't last long. As the residence has become a private property owned by Jayalalithaa's legal heirs, VK Sasikala is now initiating a bid to acquire the Poes Garden residence from both the legal heirs. Unlike Deepak, Deepa has been a strong critic of Sasikala and her clan but Sasikala, who was with Jayalalithaa for over three decades as her loyal aide, is taking steps to win her property.
Our sources say VK Sasikala has been in talks with people close to her to acquire the residence after it came under the control of Deepa and Deepak. While Sasikala is preparing for a political comeback to take over the ADMK, her next plan would be taking over the Poes Garden residence to showcase her as Jayalalithaa's successor in the party. On Thursday, Sasikala penned a letter as ADMK's General Secretary in which she asked her supporters and ADMK cadres not to worry and gave a big promise that everything will change soon.
