The counting of votes is underway in Tamil Nadu and signs are clearly visible that the ruling DMK alliance has swept major local bodies in the state as it is nearing to taste a historical victory by defeating the opposition including in the areas that posed trouble for the ruling coalition. The voting for the urban local body polls took place last Saturday amid the heated political battle between the rivals.
Ever since the counting has begun on Tuesday, DMK has been leading on all fronts across the state. The DMK candidates are leading in the marathon race and there were events and victories that have turned heads. As the local body polls were held for the first time in eleven years, the vote counting has attracted huge attention and even the political parties ran staunch campaigns. The showdown had showcased a significant rise of young candidates in politics.
It's the victories of several young people that had poured phenomenal light on the polls. In Chennai, 22-year-old DMK candidate Nilavarasi Durairaj has won the race by defeating the opposition candidates. She has become one of the youngest elected representatives and she will now take office as the Councillor of the 136th ward of the Greater Chennai Corporation, which is in Kodambakkam. Her victory has become a breakthrough for the party in the city after the assembly polls.
In yet another crucial triumph, young candidate Parithi Ilamsuruthi has won the 99th ward of the Chennai Corporation in a margin of 4000 votes. Son of DMK leader Parithi Ilamvaluthi, Ilamsuruthi has defeated former IAS Sivakami, who was the ADMK's candidate. In Vellore, 49-year-old transwoman Ganga, who was the DMK candidate, has won from the 37th ward in the Vellore corporation.
Her victory has become the talk of the town and she has been with the DMK since 2002 and she has also been serving as the secretary of the South Indian Transwomen consortium. Besides these victories, the MK Stalin wave has swept major and challenging places across Tamil Nadu. According to reports, DMK is marching towards a magnificent victory and as of 11.30 am, the party has been leading in more than 70% of the entire urban local bodies in the state.
As the ruling party is inching closer to a victory, the cadres of DMK had begun celebrating the triumphs that had given a huge blow to the ADMK and to the BJP, which had contested independently by proclaiming that the party has a strong base in the state. The candidates who won the polls have been obtaining certificates from the electoral officers and with the historical victory, DMK is heading towards the indirect polls to elect Mayors, Deputy Mayors, and Chairmen for the local bodies. These indirect polls will be held on March 4 and the ruling party has already been filled with the intra-party race between the leaders for fielding their close aides for these top posts.
