Disturbing truth of road accidents - Are the parameters of TN paralyzing?

The latest edition of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report has released the dreadful revelation on the rampant grounds of road accidents in India which had brought terrible and disturbing data in which the state of Tamil Nadu has been ranked in the second spot by accounting with 16,660 deaths from 15,414 accidents in the year of 2017.

The state is certainly not in the convincing spot of claiming to be in second place behind the state of Uttar Pradesh but rather, the report, through the unprecedented numbers, has shaken the grounds and the grids of parameters which have to be enhanced and upgraded to prevent such horrific loss of lives. The state of Uttar Pradesh had encountered about 17,700 deaths in 15,941 incidents during the same period. While Tamil Nadu ranks second in the total numbers of deaths, it was named as the state in which about 22.1% of deaths were caused due to severe offences, which has been highest in the country.

The NCRB data further revealed that out of 16,660 deaths in Tamil Nadu, about 1,461 cases were the victims of hit and run offences while the rest of the lives were lost in other kinds of accidents. With its second spot in national census, the state has been listed in the top spot while compared to the South Indian states where the state of Karnataka had accounted for 12,523 deaths and the states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala have been occupying the next spots with 8708, 8598 and 3659 deaths respectively during 2017.

However, on the other hand, the reports had unveiled that the numbers of deaths in Tamil Nadu in 2017 have reportedly reduced against the numbers in its preceding year of 2016, which was recorded with 17,130 deaths in the state and for the month of January this year, the state had registered with about 993 deaths in nearly 5,170 road accidents where 70% of these numbers were hosted by the state and national highways which had pictured the prevailing lag in the safety parameters which have been accused for these large numbers.

Speaking about the unwelcoming data, the sources from the police department said that the main reason for the deaths was increasing violations of traffic rules by public where they had cited the incidents of over speed, breaking the traffic rules and signals and not wearing helmets.

Backing the enhanced mechanisms in the state is the data from the Union ministry of Road Transport and Highways which had highlighted that the state of Tamil Nadu has been bringing down the numbers of death tolls as for the year of 2018, Tamil Nadu had recorded with 12,216 deaths in road accidents which had shown about 24% of reduction as compared to 2017. The activists had accused the NCRB report which has published the obsolete census of 2017 now by taking around two and half years and lauded the progress made by Tamil Nadu in reducing the road accidents for every year.
