Cyclone Burevi: Southern TN in high alert as it prepares to brace up heavy rainfall!

The southern districts of Tamil Nadu are preparing to tackle Cyclone Burevi which will make landfall later this week, days after cyclone Nivar had stuck the northern coastal districts of the state during which the northern districts had witnessed heavy to extremely heavy rainfall which had pushed the residents to brace up the disruptions.

According to reports, Cyclonic storm Burevi is centered in the southern Bay of Bengal on Wednesday morning and the storm is expected to cross Tamil Nadu between Kanyakumari and Pamban in Ramanathapuram in the early hours of Friday, December 4 and it has been predicted that the cyclone would bring heavy rainfall to the southern districts of the state during its course of landfall and some parts of the state have been issued with a warning and high alert. 

Taking to Twitter in the wee hours of Wednesday, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, "Cyclone storm Burevi lay centered about 330 km East-southeast of Trincomalee. To cross Sri Lanka close to Trincomalee on December 2 evening or night. To emerge into Gulf of Mannar on 3rd December morning and cross south TN between Kanyakumari and Pamban on 4th December early morning".

In its latest update, IMD said, "Cyclonic Storm ‘Burevi’ over southwest Bay of Bengal about 240 km east-southeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 470 km east-southeast of Pamban (India) and 650 km nearly east-northeast of Kanniyakumari (India) at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 02nd December 2020". The reports say districts like Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, and Sivagangai would receive extremely heavy rainfall on Wednesday. 

The districts like Madurai, Virudhunagar, Pudukottai, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Ariyalur would record very heavy rainfall on Wednesday while the districts like Kanchipuram, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, and Thiruvallur would receive heavy rain. On Thursday, the districts like Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, and Sivagangai would witness extremely heavy rainfall while Virudhunagar would see heavy to very heavy rainfall. 

According to the bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Department, the wind speeds will be gradually increasing during the course of the cyclone and will blow at 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph over southwest Bay of Bengal, along with and off Sri Lanka coast from morning to night of December 2 and would decrease thereafter. From the forenoon of December 2, the wind speech would be reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph are likely over Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar, and along and off south Tamil Nadu coast including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram districts. 

With the warning of extremely heavy rainfall, the concerned district administrations, and the Tamil Nadu state government have deployed necessary measures to tackle and address the damages caused by Cyclone Burevi. The government has deployed the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to the southern districts to carry out the relief efforts. According to ANI, two NDRF teams have been deployed to the Thoothukudi district and three teams had arrived in the Tirunelveli district on Wednesday. 

The government has issued a warning for fishermen and advised them not to venture into the southeast and southwest Bay of Bengal from December 2 and 3.  Last week, the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai had braced up Cyclone Nivar which made landfall between Karaikal and Mamallapuram. Nivar had brought extremely heavy rainfall to the districts like Cuddalore and Chennai which inundated the city and caused major disruptions to the residents.
