The Madras High Court has on Tuesday- January 25 poured a relief to actor Vijay with its directive to annul the remarks made by a judge against the actor last year in connection to the alleged tax evasion for his Rolls Royce car. The directive has come in favour of the actor three months after he approached the court with the petition of seeking an order to efface the remarks that the actor has alleged to have created negative publicity against him.
In July 2021, a High Court bench headed by Justice SM Subramaniam had come down hard on Vijay for challenging the imposition of entry tax on his imported Rolls Royce Ghost car. The actor has imported one of the luxurious cars from the UK in 2012 and the matter had gone to court after Vijay had failed to pay Rs 32 lakh entry tax. Hearing the matter, Justice Subramaniam had strongly criticized the actor over the alleged tax evasion. The judge had ordered Vijay to pay Rs 1 lakh fine in addition to paying the entire entry tax amount.
The judge further said that as an actor with a huge following, Vijay was expected to pay tax promptly and punctually and should not remain a mere 'reel life hero'. The judge has also mentioned the actor in a fashion of being anti-national. The remarks had startled the actor following which he decided to appeal to the court to efface the controversial remarks against him.
According to reports, Vijay has three months ago filed an appeal in the court, seeking to remove the judge's remarks. The counsel of the actor submitted that Vijay has paid the entire amount of Rs 32 lakh entry tax for his Rolls Royce Ghost. The petition was filed in October 2021 and his counsel Vijay Narayan has argued that the actor hasn't tried to evade tax payment, but had exercised his constitutional right to challenge the entry tax imposition.
His counsel further said that the adverse remarks from Justice Subramaniam had created negative publicity for Vijay and had portrayed him as anti-national. After the hearing, the High Court bench consisting of Justices Pushpa Satyanarayana and Mohammad Shafiq had issued the order on Tuesday -January 25 in which the court has directed the removal of Justice Subramaniam's remarks against actor Vijay.
