Actor Suriya wins big in the Indian Film Festival as 'Soorarai Pottru' adds another huge milestone to its cap!

Soorarai Pottru is closing to hit a year since its release but the movie has been greatly adding more milestones to its cap, becoming one of the paramount movies in the Tamil cinema industry in recent times. Besides being a crucial turning point for actor Suriya, who starred lead role in the movie, Soorarai Pottru is highly regarded for its storyline and for being a pioneer in Kollywood to get released directly on the OTT platform, as it was released on Amazon Prime on November 12, 2020, in wake of the indefinite closures of the theatres. 

In what has become the latest milestone, Soorarai Pottru and Suriya had won big in the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). The IFFM was founded in 2012 and it is a State government of Victoria funded annual festival based in Melbourne and the IFFM has announced the winners for its 12th edition, which was held virtually on August 20 - Friday. Actor Suriya was conferred with the award for Best Performance Male for acting in Soorarai Pottru while the movie has won the Best Feature Film award. Suriya shared the nomination card for the Best Actor with actors Benjamin Daimary, Jitin Puthenchery, Harish Khanna, Rajkummar Rao, and Pankaj Tripathi. 

However, Suriya had eventually won the award while actor Samantha Akkineni had conferred the award of Best Performance (Female) for her performance in the web series of 'The Family Man 2'. The web series was released on June 4 on Amazon Prime Video and it was also starred Manoj Bajpayee and Samantha in the lead roles. While The Family Man 2 had garnered a good reception, the series had run into controversies and condemnations in Tamil Nadu for projecting scenes that demeaned the struggle for Tamil Eelam. 

The director of the Kannada film 'Pinki Elli?' Prithvi Konanur had received the Honorary Mention as Best Director while actor Vidya Balan was conferred with the award for Best Female Actor in a feature film for her performance in the movie 'Sherni', which was released recently. Bollywood actor Pankaj Tripathi was honoured with the Diversity in Cinema Award. Malayalam movie 'The Great Indian Kitchen' had turned many heads for its honour in the IFFM. The Great Indian Kitchen, which is one the critically acclaimed movies in Malayalam, had won the award under the category of Equality in Cinema. 

The Great Indian Kitchen was directed by Jeo Baby and released on 15th January this year on Amazon Prime. The movie stars actors Suraj Venjarmoodu and Nimisha Sajayan in the lead roles and it has revolved around covering the gender and patriarchal issues in the Indian households and it had earned a sea of praises and commendations from across and beyond the borders. Nimisha Sajayan had received an honorary mention in the IFFM for her role in The Great Indian Kitchen. 

Anurag Basu has won the Best Director award for his movie 'Ludo' while 'Mirzapur Season 2' was selected as the Best Series. Manoj Bajpayee had won the award of the Best Actor in a Series for his acting in 'The Family Man 2' and Faraz Arif Ansari's directorial 'Sheer Qorma' had won the award under the category of Equality in Cinema (Short Film), and 'Fire in the Mountains' and 'Shut Up Sona' had won awards for Best Indie Film and Best Documentary Film respectively. 

Soorarai Pottru was produced by Suriya and Guneet Monga and directed by Sudha Kongara. While Suriya has played the lead role, Paresh Rawal, Aparna Balamurali, Urvashi, Karunas, and Kaali Venkat had played important roles. The movie is based on 'Simply Fly', the biography of captain GR Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan, a low-cost airliner. Soorarai Pottru was submitted to the Academy Awards and enlisted as one among the 366 films that were eligible for Best Picture. After the movie has bagged yet another milestone in IFFM on Friday, Suriya took to Twitter and wrote, "@IFFMelb, you made it very special for us with 2 awards! Thank you #SudhaKongara for making me Maara... and trusting @2D_ENTPVTLTD #SooraraiPottru team this is for you..!"
