Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan has come up with a big plan to turn the iconic seashore in Chennai to a venue for Tamil Nadu's traditional sport, Jallikattu. The sport is widely played across the state during the Pongal festival and as the festival is fast approaching, several districts have made a plan to organize Jallikattu. At this high time, Kamal Haasan has expressed his desire to organize the sport at Marina Beach.
On Friday, Kamal Haasan addressed an event organized by his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, in Chennai during which he came down hard on the BJP regime and said that the party is planning to conduct a Jallikattu competition at Marina Beach. The event was organized to distribute certificates to the party functionaries who took part at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra.
Kamal Haasan and hundreds of his party cadres had participated in the Bharat Jodo Yatra on December 24 in Delhi upon the invitation from Rahul Gandhi. The actor-turned-politican shared stage with Rahul Gandhi and praised the latter for his nationwide march. Rahul Gandhi's rendezvous with Kamal Haasan was also going viral and days after turning heads through his participation, Kamal Haasan had now drawn a sharp attention by expressing his desire to organize Jallikattu at Marina Beach.
Speaking at the party's event, Kamal Haasan slammed the central BJP regime for its bigotry politics. "We must stop politics that is being played out based on Hindu religion. Rahul Gandhi's yatra was in a fashion of uniting the Indian people", Kamal Haasan added. He also had a discussion with the party leaders about the way forward.
On why he desires to organize the first-of-its-kind event of Jallikattu at Marina Beach, Kamal Haasan said that when Jallikattu was banned years ago, Marina Beach hosted a historical protest to lift the ban against Tamil Nadu's traditional sport and the ban on the sport was eventually removed. To reminisce that protest, which had a global attention, Kamal Haasan said that Jallikattu must be conducted at the Marina Beach. By citing that the permission has been sought from the government, Kamal Haasan expressed his hope that the government will give its consent to organize the sport at one of the top attractions of Chennai.
