When you see someone with a peculiar look on the road, you stop for a moment and notice them. It is an automatic process which requires no special effort from us. In the film industry, when you are flooded with people who have good looks, it is no wonder that a man with a completely different hairstyle turns the attention of the audience, especially when he does comic roles. Babu, who made his debut in the 2009 film 'Yogi' and became Yogi Babu after that film, is an actor who the audience could easily relate to, not only because of his looks.
When Yogi Babu entered the film industry after working as the assistant director in 'Lollu Sabha', a famous spoof show in Vijay TV, he was not welcomed immediately. Santhanam was at his peak as a leading comedian and was considered to be the saving grace of many films at that time. Yogi played very small roles in the beginning years in movies like Thillalangadi, Paiyaa, and Velayutham. His first extended role came up with Vishal's 'Pattathu Yaanai' and once people started liking him, there was no turning back. He signed on new films back to back. His performance in 'Maan Karate' gave him a separate fan base.
Yogi Babu's portrayal as 'Panni Moonji Vaayan' in the movie 'Yaamirukka Bayamey' had taken him to the big league of comedy actors. He is known for his very natural body language and the typical Chennai accent while delivering his dialogues. Vadivelu was the one to become famous with the Madurai accent and it was after a long time that the industry saw someone with a native touch in comedy. This took him more closer to the audience. Vijay Sethupathi's 'Aandavan Kattalai' in 2016 had Yogi Babu playing the role of the hero's friend and he excelled in that role with ease. His one-liners have started becoming a sensation by then.
This is a season where heroines take up the lead roles and make a movie successful, both in Bollywood and Kollywood. Nayanthara is one star that is shining bright for the past few years as a lead in her movies. Her 2018 film 'Kolamavu Kokila' was yet another feather in her cap. Guess who played the male lead in that film? It was Yogi Babu, to everyone's surprise.
Though Yogi and Nayanthara were not a romantic pair in the movie, the decision of Nayanthara to accept this move has become a sensation once it was announced. Yogi Babu played emotional roles along with comedy in movies like 'Pariyerum Perumal' and 'Comali' which strengthened his career.
Yogi Babu has also faced criticism for being too talkative in films. He adds too many dialogues while dubbing for his films which disturbs the actual feel of the scenes. He is also said to be repeating his own comedy and dwelling into the same type of one-liners over and over again. It is time that he stops making content only out of his own body and looks in all his movies. He has acted with almost every leading hero in the industry and has grown to a stage where the producers are ready to invest in a movie that has him on the screen for most of the running time (Dharmaprabhu, Gurkha are some of the examples).
Yogi Babu's call sheet is the first requirement today if you are directing a movie and he is acting in more number of films than any of his peers right now. With more original content and emotional performances which he is very good at, Yogi Babu is sure to reach bigger heights in the future.
