In 2025, the world's population will breach the mark of 8 billion and will you believe the city of Hosur in Tamil Nadu would have a contribution to the global surge of the population? The fact is, yes it is as the population in the city is rapidly increasing given to its tag of one of the important economical and industrial hubs in India. According to a report published by Visual Capitalist, the cities in Africa and Asia will majorly contribute to the rise of the population.
The report has revealed that Hosur has been ranked number 13 in the list of 20 global cities with the fastest population growth with an annual growth rate of 5.38%. The report has used data from the United Nations to rank the top 20 fastest growing cities in the world in terms of average annual population growth rate from 2020 to 2025. Hosur sits in the Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu, sharing its border with the neighbouring state of Karnataka and also shares proximity with Andhra Pradesh.
As per the 2011 population census, Hosur had a population of just around 1.10 lakh people and the population rate in the city has significantly grown for the last few years and in 2019, Hosur was declared a corporation by the Tamil Nadu government. The city also has a SIPCOT township. Being an industrial city, Hosur is home to major manufacturing industries including Titan, Ashok Leyland, TVS Motors, Sundaram Fasteners, and Caterpillar. In its report, Visual Capitalist described the city as, "Located on the border of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Hosur is situated at 3,000 feet above sea level and is one of India's top industrial hubs with close to 2,300 small and medium scale industries.
It also houses manufacturing units of large companies like Titan and TVS Motors. Situated predominantly in the Tamil Nadu region, the people here speak Kannada and Telugu, besides Tamil." As per the report, the majority of the world's fastest-growing cities are located in Africa, with 17 of the top 20 located in the continent and four of the cities are located in Nigeria. It has highlighted that the population growth is rapidly increasing across Africa as many countries are reporting a surge in birth rates.
While 17 cities sit in Africa, the rest three is in Asia with Hosur being the only Indian city on the list. The report has also predicted that sub-Saharan Africa will be home to close to 2 billion people and half of the population will be under the age of 25. The report added that this huge scale of the young population represents opportunities for innovation and growth. It also has said that amid reporting a population surge, these cities could face adverse implications as the sequel of the increase as they would be bracing up for the issues including pollution, overcrowding, high costs of living, and mass urbanization.
