With the view of enhancing the spoken English skills of the students in the government schools, the school education department of the state of Tamil Nadu has proposed to implement one period every week in the schools that will be dedicated to teach English for the students from January next year.
It has been reported that Tamil Nadu State Council for Education Research and Training (TNSCERT) has prepared and finalized the study and training modules with the help of experts and teachers and the modules will be released by the state school education minister Sengottaiyan on Wednesday. The reports say that the state council of Education Research and Training has prepared handbooks through which the government school teachers would be inducted for training sessions on handling the modules from next month.
Through this new initiative, a 90-minute class would be reserved for weekly once for the students of classes 1 to 5 in the panchayat unions schools and government schools for improving the spoken English skills whereas the students from classes 6 to 9 would undergo weekly sessions which will be held for 45 minutes.
The school education department has issued an order to the chief educational officers of the districts to induct the teaching and activity-based learning for the students. The reports stated that the teaching videos will also be uploaded soon on the Tamil Nadu Teachers' Platform and Kalvi Tholaicatchi, which is the television channel owned and operated by the government for education purpose.
In the academic year of 2012-13, the state government of Tamil Nadu has introduced English as a medium of instruction in the government schools where most of the schools in the state have the grounds for separate English medium sections along with the Tamil medium sections.
