The cricketing world gets excited whenever a player who is more than just a player arrives in the arena. When the 18-year-old Yuvraj Singh made his ODI debut in 2000, not many would have imagined the heights he would reach in the future. Of course, life is unpredictable. It is a paradox that Yuvraj, who is known for his batting prowess impressed everyone with his bowling performance in his debut match against Kenya. He didn't get to bat in his first match.
It was in the match against his favorite opponent Australia that he smashed 84 runs and bagged the man of the match award for the first time. Yuvraj's 69 runs off 63 balls in the finals of the 2002 Natwest series against England that took India to victory must be the innings that is very close to his heart for various reasons. It was the time when a young and aspiring Indian team under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly was growing stronger day by day. Yuvraj was a huge value addition to the squad.
Yuvraj Singh is a wonderful bowler who is known for bowling economically and picking up the crucial wickets when it is needed the most. He is also a terrific fielder and the amount of runs saved by him for the Indian team have brought us many victories. When we say Yuvraj Singh, the first thing that comes to our mind is his batting performance in the 2007 World T20 match against England. Who could forget the monstrous six sixes hit by him in the over bowled by Stuart Broad? He was in the beast mode, fully pumped up. His 58 runs from just 16 balls against England and 70 runs from 30 balls against Australia in that series were widely spoken about.
Yuvraj won the man of the series award in the 2011 World Cup with 362 runs and 15 wickets and was instrumental in helping India win the prestigious World Cup after 28 years. Soon after the world cup, he was diagnosed with cancer that shook the entire world of cricket. He wasn't shaken, because he is Yuvraj Singh.
The way in which he handled that pressure, had undergone chemotherapy, and came back with confidence is a lesson to be taught to future generations. After coming out successfully from the disease, he was back to the team again in the 2012 World T20 series. Though he was not in his usual form with the bat, his bowling performance was exceptional. Whenever he was not picked in the national squad, he would happily return to his favorite Ranji cricket and showcase his abilities.
Yuvraj Singh is known for his 'never give up' attitude and an unbelievable level of confidence. In 2015, he was picked by the Delhi Daredevils team in the IPL for a whopping 16 crore that made him the most expensive player ever bought in the IPL history, though he was more successful with the Kings XI Punjab team later. Yuvraj was conferred with the Padma Shri award in 2014 by the Government of India.
There is nothing that Yuvraj Singh hasn't achieved in his cricketing career for the past 20 years. In a recent statement refuting his father's negative comments against the ongoing farmers' protest in Delhi, Yuvraj extended his full support to the farmers. This is why Yuvraj is more special.
