In what has become a horrible incident that the city had reminisced a similar incident that happened in the city in 2016, 21-year-old Swetha was stabbed by 25-year-old Ramachandran near the Tambaram railway station on Thursday afternoon.
After hacking her to death, Ramachandran had attempted to sever his throat before the public. However, his attempt was dismantled and he was later handed over to the police. While Swetha was dead, Ramachandran has been getting treatment in the hospital under a tight watch. The incident that came from nowhere had stunned the public who were at and around the spot and drawn major attention across the nation. Swetha was a resident of Chrompet and a sophomore, pursuing a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology in MCC.
The accused Ramachandran is a native of Thirukkuvalai in Nagapattinam district and he had been working at a car manufacturing unit in Chengalpattu and was staying in Maraimalai Nagar in the outskirts of Chennai. According to the police, the deceased student and accused Ramachandran had known each other for the past three years. On Thursday, Ramachandran had called Swetha for a meet and they had met on Thursday afternoon near Railway quarters in Tambaram. The victim was accompanied by one of her friends and soon, the duo had picked up an argument.
As the argument continued, Ramachandran had taken a knife that he was hiding with him and stabbed Swetha on her neck. He went on to stab her on her stomach several times and Swetha's friend had begun screaming as her friend was laid on the pool of blood when the passers-by witnessed the incident and were stunned to react. When Ramachandran tried to leave the spot, the public had surrounded him following which he threatened that he would slit his own throat. However, his attempt was stopped by some of the people and the incident was immediately reported to the police.
The police arrived at the spot and taken Swetha to Chrompet government hospital. However, she was declared brought dead by the doctors. The officials had taken Ramachandran under this custody and as he sustained injuries during his suicide attempt, he was admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and is undergoing treatment. The reports say that the victim and the accused Ramachandran had become close three years ago when they met accidentally on a train to Nagapattinam. Their friendship had turned into love and two months ago, the duo had a tussle after Ramachandran got angry with the victim saying her phone was busy whenever he called. In the wake of Covid-19 lockdowns, they had been interacting over the phone and they decided to meet on Thursday to sort the issue. However, the argument had broken out between them and Swetha has said that she had decided to end her relationship with Ramachandran as he was suspicious about her.
As she decided to end her relationship, Ramachandran had taken the knife out and stabbed Swetha to death in a broad daylight. As Ramachandran was taken into custody, the police had inquired him amid the treatment during which he put out a shocking confession that he had killed Swetha as she was getting rid of him and avoiding speaking with him. He got angered that she was avoiding him and he planned to kill her and commit suicide and he spoke to her and said that he wanted to meet her.
Ramachandran further said, "We have met near railway quarters in Tambaram and I asked her not to avoid me. However, she didn't listen and decided to break the relationship. I took out the knife that I was hiding with me and stabbed her to death and I attempted to commit suicide by slitting my throat." It must be noted that in 2016, 26-year-old Swathi was hacked to death in Nungambakkam railway station and in 2017, a 27-year-old man from Erode had tried to kill a woman at Chetpet railway station and in this case, the woman had survived with severe injuries. The incident that happened near Tambaram station on Thursday had become the third such incident that Chennai had witnessed in the past six years.
