It's most probably over for the Chennai Super Kings as they are making way towards exiting the season without entering the playoffs, for the first time in the IPL history. The faltering state of the team and making no fixation to repair the damages had pushed the CSK to a never-wished rank as after losing the match against Rajasthan Royals, Dhoni's team has placed at the last spot in the points table.
The Chennai Super Kings never seem to have learnt anything from their failures. Moreover, they are failing to reframe the strategies when it comes to team selection. In the match against Rajasthan Royals, CSK took the battle by having Kedar Jadhav and Piyush Chawla in the squad, leaving the fans to get mentally ready for any result. It was Dhoni who won the toss and decided to bat first. This was a crucial game for the CSK as they were in a compulsion to win every game from here on to qualify for the playoffs.
Though having the prospect of putting the high score on the board as CSK had won the toss and chose to bat first, Dhoni's fleet failed to make use of it as the team again proved that the damage in the batting line up has never been fixed nor they intended to fix. Sam Curran looked like he was going to score big but got dismissed for 22 runs. No other batsmen could make it big or even provide an average performance in the CSK's batting order.
Dhoni's poor form continued as he scored 28 runs from 28 balls before getting run out. Kedar Jadhav batted in a laxity despite knowing the importance of the match while Jadeja scored 35 runs and he was the only player who had some intent to score runs. CSK scored a very poor total of 125 runs in their 20 overs, which is neither the score of T20 cricket nor would the opponents be contained in chasing it. Shreyas Gopal and Rahul Tewatia bowled beautifully with an outstanding economy rate picking up one wicket each.
Rajasthan Royals lost the wickets of Ben Stokes, Robin Uthappa, and Sanju Samson for just 28 runs and the depressed fans of CSK found themselves having an outside chance. However, Jos Buttler and Steve Smith joined hands and made sure that they didn't lose any more wicket in their innings. The Rajasthan Royals won the match comfortably by 7 wickets and Jos Buttler contributed a fantastic 70 runs to take his team home.
For the first time ever in the IPL, it seems that the CSK fans are bracing up for the fact that the team will be ousted from the season without entering the playoffs. CSK has four more matches and even if it manages to win all four, the chances are less likely to make to the playoffs. CSK has been surfaced with the debacles and disappointments for what had become blunders in the team selection by keeping talented players like Imran Tahir and Jegadeesan at the bench. The team has ultimately suffered in the team selection and building a winning momentum. We can only hope that they include such talents at least in the remaining matches and give their emotional fans something to cherish in this season.
At the current state, CSK is the only team to lose more matches in the current season and Dhoni's fleet had surpassed KXIP, which had lost five matches consecutively, in defeats. So far, CSK has played 10 matches of which it had lost seven and pushed to the last spot in the points table. Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals had defeated CSK in the league in all two games respectively.
After conceding the seventh defeat, MS Dhoni, while addressing in the post-match presentation ceremony said, "You don't want to chop and change. Insecurity is something you don't want to prevail in the dressing room. Fair enough, this season we weren't really there. The youngsters, we didn't see the spark to push the guys. But what this result has done is give those youngsters a chance in the rest of the tournament. Maybe going forward, we bring them in and they play without pressure".
Though it was a celebrating moment for MS Dhoni as he has become the most capped player in the IPL after playing 200 matches, he was eventually unhappy and stated "It's not always supposed to go your way. We have to see if the process was wrong. The result is a by-product of the process, but the fact still remains that if you're focused on the process, then the undue pressure of the result doesn't enter the dressing room". CSK head coach Stephen Fleming admitted that the team was pretty down. Former Kiwi cricketer said, "We have come close in a couple of games, but today we were thoroughly outplayed. When you're relying on other results and change of form for your own team, it's very hard to be upbeat and positive".
